Jr vs. Sr skates

Recommended Posts

Hey, a bit of a weird question, but are Jr skates exactly the same as SR skates, but smaller? Or are they of lower quality?

I'm in a fairly unique situation - I was at my LHS and was told I can squeeze into a 5.5, but for comfort, I should use a 6. I have typical CCM feet, so CCM and RBK are the only skates I've felt comfortable in. As it turns out, 5.5 are Jr's and 6's are Sr's in CCM/RBK. Any advice?

There are others on this board who know more than I on this subject (e.g., J.R.), but since I have small feet I know a little bit. Jr. skates are made for lighter players, that is less support, stiffness. The average wearer of a size 5 skate is probably some gangly 11 year old who weighs 95 pounds. I wear a size 5.5 skate, but am 180 pounds. Until ordering custom 5.5 senior skates, I have worn size six senior skates. I would have problems wearing the junior model. I tried on a pair of Vapor XXX Jr. skates in size 5.5, and the difference in support, padding, and stiffness was immediately apparent.

I'm also wondering if there is any difference in fit as well; if they aren't proportioned correctly.

I have small feet (5.5) but I might be able to fit into a 6 this year. My feet are still growing, I think. :P

Senior skates are higher cut, stiffer, and oftentimes just a better skate.

I noticed the stiffness and the higher cut when I moved up to senior skates...

What Kevin says is accurate. If you're a lightweight, junior skates will work well for you. Plus you'll save a bunch of money.

On the other hand, if you're heavy, or are a really strong skater, the junior boots will break down a lot faster.

I'm on the border as well, but I can skate okay so I got size 6 RBK 9k's as they're very stiff.
