Cooper SK100 Old School Helmets

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me why Cooper SK100's sell for so much on Ebay? They can go for upwards of $100 and sometimes reach $200 for unused ones. Even the junior model sells for much more than it seems to be worth. I can't see these being much of a collectors item. I have heard they are used for hurling in Ireland, but you would think if there is a market there someone would have made something better by now.

I had that helmet very early in my hockey playing career and it was a very good helmet. A lot of guys found it very comfortable and light so I guess they'd like to find one to wear again. With other guys it's just the nostagalia of going back to when equipment was fairly simple and there where only a few major manufacturers who you chose for your personal hockey needs. Back when CCM was king of the skates and Bauer was just making their dent in the market.

You answered your own question. They are for some reason, extremely popular as hurling helmets. Maybe due to the lack of protection and light weight.

My question seems only partially answered, as evidenced by your reply. You included the qualifier "for some reason". I would like to know the reason. I can't believe that anyone would want to wear one of these for sport. The foams they used at the time were polyethylene foams that rapidly deteriorate over time. I guess in hurling you have to be a man by wearing as little protection as possible, and still look like a dork while doing it. It also seems that they are making new helmets, such as Mycro, and Azzurri Which still makes me question why you would pay $200 for a "new" SK100 on Ebay plus shipping to Ireland versus buying a truly new Mycro or Azzurri helmet.
