Using inline skates not made for roller hockey at rink?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I used to be a roller hockey player until 1994 when I picked up ice hockey instead. In those days I had my "rollerblade" skates (Aeroblade and lightning if i remember)

Well since then, it appears that those skates are more for cross training and recreational use and inline skates made by mission/rbk/ccm have taken over the rollerhockey market.

Would I be laughed out of the roller hockey rink if I used recreation skates (those with actual heel brakes) instead of the roller hockey skates?

In the league I play in, you're not allowed to use a heel brake if you have one. I think there's a high potential to trip over them. I have seen a few players with rec skates. However, those players aren't the best skaters and probably have poor mobility due to their skates.

Take off the heel brake for sure. One of the most aggressive guys in my league wears lightnings. In a beer league aggressive skating, position playing, hockey sense, and just having fun will make you stand out. I think it is kind of cool watching the old school dude on lightenings kick everyone's ass. If you're good, no one will laugh for long. You may want to check your wheels and bearings.

yah, same in my league. You always seem to see an old guy who doesn't give a damn what people think about his K2s, as he skates around people ;)

If its been that long, I suggest checking your skates to ensure they still hold up. In my experience with rec skates, they do break down over time when the plastic gets harder, and a little flexing now could just ruin the whole thing.

I still think that rec skates were really comfortable, just didnt provide me the manuerability of hockey skates these days. You never know, maybe go custom with a rec skate boot and hockey chassis?

The thing that would scare me is protection,

most of those are a hard plastic shell with a boot liner type of some sort... some of them even have the boot liner exposed. I would hate to take a slapshot off of one of those areas.

As it stands now, blocking shots hurt sometimes with skates designed for hockey...

I think it depends on the brand and model you use. I used to have some Roces, and some Rollerblade Lightning TRS. Both were used when I played goalie and as a center. Took many slapshots off the foot, and never felt anything much.

i still use lightings when i play goal. They are perfect with aggressive wheels for outdoors.

I used my roller blade lightning skates for roller hockey up untill last year. I had take the heel brake off and put roller hockey wheels on, but the skate itself will limit your ability to actually skate. I was forced to upgrade after 15 years using the Lightnings. It was a very comfy skate, but it just couldn't keep up anymore. moved onto the rbk 4k and 5k '07 models and love them.

As long as you start playing, who cares what you use...The more people in the sport, the better...

I'm all for this as well. In a sport where an additional player (even 1) is a welcome thing, just show up and start playing! The downside of this are the rules of the particular rink you're skating in. You may want to check that out first. Other than that get out there!
