Foot Pain in Youth Ice Skate

Recommended Posts

My daughter just got fitted for a new pair of Easton Synergy youth skates. She's a beginner, and she is having foot pain on the middle of the sole of her right foot (just inward from the ball). Left foot is fine.

I know that part of this is just the break-in process. But I'm looking for suggestions to help speed this along, as it's not helping her learning curve.

So far, I've played with lacing tension without any change. We did not get these baked when we bought them (they're not specifically heat moldable but is this something to consider?).

What do you think about putting in some basic insoles, like Dr. Sholl's?

Thanks for any advice!!

I'm assuming she's fitted properly and all.

Have her wear the skates for a bit around the house and that would help the break in period. I also had this pain only in the right foot and what also helped was how I tied my laces. I only tie up the top 3 eyelets and for the rest of them just a little tug to keep them neat.

I also had to put a small lift under the footbed since I have arches.

Yea I've had this problem with my skates before even when they were baked. Its all just part of breaking the skates in and getting used to it. Aftet about 5-8 skates it usually will go away, but for some suggestions, have you daughter wear them when she is watching TV and tie them as tight as you can for about 5-10 minutes to help break in the skate. DO NOT WALK AROUND YOUR HOUSE THOUGH OR ANYTHING BECAUSE THEY AREN'T MADE FOR THAT. Just sit and watch TV and whenever she has spare time just but the skates on for a little bit and after awhile the pain should go away.

I would get your daughter and her skates back to the store and see if they can address the issue. It sounds like there is pressure on the one foot.

Yeah, I went through the exact same thing last year with my daughter. I just explained that breaking in skates is a part of the game and the harder she skates, the quicker they will begin to feel comfortable. She was fine after about 6 grueling skates (I'm the coach).

I would go back to the LHS and see what they say...

I'd put a good 10 or 15 skates in them to break them in...

I'd also consider an insert like superfeet ringht away. I wouldn't consider using ANY skate without them.

My daughter has flat, pronated feet and has never been able to get an easton skate to work for her. Instant pain pretty much where you describe your daughter's pain is. Easton's skate is very flat... and is actually TOO flat for my daughter, doesn't give enough support to her arch.

Take the insole out and feel the sole of the skate. Check for a raised rivet or a bump in the sole. I had a pair of Bauer inlines that had a bump on the insole, made for some very painful skating...

Thanks to everyone for the responses! I've got a few more things to try... I'll let everyone know if there's anything outside of just normal break-in that I'm able to do to help this.
