My son has club foot problems

Recommended Posts

First let me thank you for taking time to read this, as I am anxious to get some help with a problem my son has been having.

My son was born with bi-lateral club foot....which means the bottoms of both of his feet were basically upside down and his toes turned in when he was born. Two corrective surgeries when he was still a baby and years of braces and casts have turned what was a kid who literally should not be able walk, into a hockey nut who loves nothing better to gear up and hit the ice.

My question is his right foot (which has always been his problem foot) rolls over (out) on his ankle. no matter how tight I lace him up, nothing sems to help out. Is there an orthotic (sp) available to help or would taping his ankle be an ok solution.

He is doing great in his learn to play hockey classes, but to progress he needs to be more upright on his skates.

Thanks again for reading.

He certainly needs a custom orthotic (IMO-not a doctor!)and/or maybe a custom skate? Maybe a sports orthopedist could advise you.Probably expensive, but worth it.

No manufacturer will make a custom skate that small.

You will have to see an orthopedic doctor and get an orthotic footbed done. You may have to shim the skate as well - obviously I have not seen your son's feet, but if it is extreme and requires an extreme orthotic, it may not fit inside the skate.

Custom orthodics are murder to your wallet. They cost $600-1000 for doctor molded ones if I remember correctly. Had them until i was 13 (extreamly flat footed)

Luckily, my wife is a nurse and we have PHENOMINAL health insurance which will cover the etine cost minus co-pay.

When I was a kid I played with a guy who was born with club feet and had the braces when he was younger. Back then Micron had the plastic hinged skates, and he used the Quadra-Flex. The hinge in the skates let the ankles bend only in the right direction.

He couldn't use leather skates because his foot would flop over the wrong way. But, leather skates weren't as stiff back then.
