Cage shield combos

Recommended Posts

I'm gunna be playing some college hockey this fall in the ACHA league which goes by NCAA rules and i was wondering if anyone knew what their rulings are and if i would be allowed to wear one of the sheild cage combos.

also for anyone that owns a itech fx-50 or the oakley combo could you show me a picture of it on your helmet. I dont have LHS in my town to check them out and i have some concerns about each one. the search wasn't very helpful when looking for a picture in the show your gear thread.

From the NCAA rulebook.....

Section 5C. All players are required to wear facemasks that have met the standards established by the HECC-ASTM F 513-95 Eye and Face Protective Equipment for Hockey Players Standard.

The Oakley Visor/Cage combo that I have says it's HECC Certified but the ASTM # is F513-89.

Well it was legal in the Junior World Olympics in Mighty Ducks 2, so I can't see why it wouldn't work here?

But in all reality, I play NCAA and you can wear combos, unless your cage is severely dinged, rusted or like dangerous to you or other players, no official will say anything to you. As long as you aren't a problem to refs, they won't be a problem to you.

well thats good to hear, i actually don't have one. i was looking at getting one because i just wear a half shield now and i tired playing with a cage the other day and there just no way im going to get use to that.

itech doesnt say anything about being certified, so maybe i should go with the Oakley. I like the oakley one because it looks like it has a bigger shield part vs the itech, but only concern i had was from others on the forums saying that it fogs up, but the search didn't really turn up many results on it anyways. Do you have any problems with yours jeff?

I haven't used it yet. It didn't fit my Carbster. I have a Bauer 5000 now but haven't put it on yet since it came with an Itech half shield.

The Itechs are certified. There are lots of players in NCAA D1 and D3 that wear them.

well the visor looks kinda small compared to the oakley. i dont know if maybe the cage part would be in your line of sight on the bottom part of the visor. i think it doesnt look as good as the oakley but thats not really a concern.

I'm curious to hear from combo users as to why they chose a combo over a full fishbowl? Any advantages or just aesthetics?

I think if the fog is controlled/not annoying and the sweat rolling down is controlled/not annoying then they're good. I personally prefer the vision with a full silver or white cage, better airflow and lower maintenance. I also found the bottom cage part to be kind of distracting on the combo. I guess its a trick your eyes play on you, but I never notice my cage once I'm actually playing...but with the combo I would notice the cage part because of the change in the visual field. I had two oakley combos that I used for about six months and then I went back to the full cage.
