S-video cable

Recommended Posts

I just bought a PS3 but only have a cheap 13" TV to play it on, but my laptop is brand new with a 17" LCD monitor, and I'd much rather play my games off that than the 13" TV. My question is, will the video quality be as good using the S-video cable as it would be on the TV, and/or does it all depend on the quality of the cable?

check your laptop and see, but I think that the S-video jack on your laptop is an output only.

How would I go about checking whether the S-video jack is output only or if it swings both ways

your manual is the best place usually.

However usually the only way to get video into a computer is by USB or firewire, and that is usually for encoding video from an external source....ie DV cam etc....

Laptop displays are not meant to display outside source video.

That being said try this.

to see if its output only (which i can almost guarantee) the picture next to the jack on the laptop will be a tv with an arrow pointing out of it.

Most S-video's on laptops are output only. The way to tell is look at your Function keys at the top of your keyboard. You can plug your console into the S-video and then hit CONTROL and F8 (or one of the other function keys, they should say MTR or MON or DISP in blue text on the key) and this will toggle your computer from screen display, output on the s-video, and potentially input from the s-video.

good luck.

i'm almost 100% sure your laptops s-video is for output only. you'll need a decoder (most common is a tv-tuner) which is almost always external to get s-video to your laptop.

i want to know why you'd spend 600 bucks on a console when you dont have anything worth playing it on.

Come to think of it......the man has definately got a point. This may be a more important question worth answering........

i do have something to play it on, a tv. my question was concerned with looking at playing on my laptop, as it's a better quality screen. i have no gripes playing on my tv, but if there was a way to play on my laptop, why not? and i checked, and it is output only. i'm glad i found out before buying the cord. i apologize that i do not have a 40"+ plasma to play off of, but it's hard to afford such luxuries when you're a student.

i'm a student, too. i also dont run out and buy $600 consoles.

i slaved away all summer, working 18 hr days, 5-6 days a week. i believe i deserved something for my slave labor.

You might as well drop $200-300 on a decent CRT TV if that's all you can afford, playing a PS3 on a 13" tv will really suck, but in the end I guess it's better than nothing!
