3 on 3

be prepared to skate. a lot more than usual. 3 on 3 can be pretty fun just because of how much open ice there is, you get room to skate, and control the puck more, you spread the ice out. I think the best tip for 3 on 3 is not to be afraid to skate with the puck, there is more open space, so you don't have to pass quite as much. 3 on 3 also helps you become a better 2 way player, you gotta play offense and d.

Keep in a triangle-ish formation with your line mates, and play man-to-man D.

if there are 3 men on the ice, its actually impossible for them not to be in a triangle unless they are in a perfectly straight line. :P

I have played a lot of 3v3. A big tip is to keep moving. We liked to go in a circle formation keeping one man low on the net for screens and tips and two high. One of the high would either take a shot or come in on net. When that happens the man on net goes out toward the faceoff dot and rotates to the blueline. The man extra on blueline shifts to the opposite side while the man that was on line with the puck goes in on the net.

*ADDED*

This sounds confusing so here is the breakdown.

2 man on blue line in normal offensive-defensive formation. D1 on onside D2 on the other and W1 on net. Lets do a situation.

D1 has the puck. He goes in on net to take a shot. At this point W1 should be facing him and waiting for a tip shot. Once D1 makes it about half way in W1 starts breaking free and shifting to the other side of the net for a open shot if D1 were to pass. D2 Will shift to where D1 was making him self open about half way down the blue line just in case D1 has to dump it back. Lets say that D1 takes a shot. W1 should be close enough for a rebound if it hits off his pads. If D1 dumps it back to D2 W1 continues to move to where D2 was, D1 goes to net and takes over W1's spot and D2 moves to where D1 was. It's just a big circle. The idea is to keep moving. Its hard for the opposing team to keep their defense up when you have momentum and they are having to keep shifting out. They don't have much room to skate whereas you do.

Using this is nice because they usually try and 2 man the puck handler leaving an open man. If you can keep it on your zone it works well. On the blue line I like to shoot slappers in. Every now and then I will fake a hard slapshot on an incoming defender and either skate around him for a shot or I will skate right at the goalie to draw him out leaving a lot of net for the guy who WAS sitting on net who should be making himself open for a one timer or tip on the open real estate.

Defense can be hard if you let it. You have to be confident on d going one on one. Once you break down and go 2v1 it will leave an open man and a cheap shot on net. You really have to let the goalie do his job here too because you have to stick to your man and cant use the usual 5v5 or 4v4 shifting that you would normally do on d. I try and keep one guy up top for the quick break out but it doesn't happen that often when you stick your man.

hope that helps a little.

The schedules at 3 on 3 tournaments are a littlte hectic, so the biggest tip I can give is to move the puck as much as possible. This will help save your legs for the two or three games per day.

You'd be surprised at how many idiots will trail/skate beside one another.
