Cleaning your Equipment

Recommended Posts

Soak the gear in solution of major water to minor bleach. Leave the pads in there for a few hrs and you'll see the water turn to coffee! Let the pads dry in the sun or if sun isn't around (ie: crazy winter in Canada) then leave the pads by a furnace or heater.

To get rid of the itching, wee on the rashy spot next time you are in the shower. It sounds like something out of SE7EN I know but it works, I've done this twice over the past few yrs as I refuse to throw out my Bauer shin pads from 1997.

Airing out your gear does help ALLOT, but if its gear as old as my shinnys then you've just gotta clean them up.

But I haven't washed it in years and I'm starting to get these little rashes on the inside of my knees which burn like hell, I don't wanna drop money on professional cleaning,

so lets see, its gotten to a point of a rash, no wait a burning itching rash... and you wont spend $40 to avoid gtting a staph infection?????

Wait till you see how much a Staph infection costs on medical bills, and time off....

<_<

but dont worry, those things never happen ....

do yourself a favor...take care of yourself.

I appreciate the sarcasm, but I live in Canada, I don't pay for medical, and I wasn't aware that professional cleaning was only 40$. Anyways I have found that putting my equipment in a tub full of hot water and bleach seems to do the trick.

But the thing is i've never washed my equipment before (well like 3 years ago...) and the other day I washed one of my shoulder braces, which smelled horrible, in the bleach solution and it worked. Therefore I will proceed to wash my shin/elbow/shoulder pads in that same solution.

I've found washing on delicate cycle/low spin on a front loading washing machine works for shinnies/elbows/shoulders. Wouldn't try it with gloves, pants, or helmets, but between airing out my equipment on a rack after use and washing every couple of months, my stuff isn't too bad after almost a year of frequent use (3-5 times a week).

Shock Doctor Power Dry bag , works wonders.

This summer when I got it I threw all my gear inside it and ran it for about a day, no smell anymore.

There wasn't much to begin with as I let my gear air dry in front of a small fan heater after every game and I found that it worked well to do that, but having the Shock Doctor bag keeps things in a nice neat package and there is zero smell for others as the stuff dries.
