What does "torque-ing" mean?

Recommended Posts

I've seen the term used more than once on topics about sticks flexes (sorry - too lazy to search and link). So after seeing it enough times, I just wanted to see if someone could describe it for me.

What is it?

How do you know it's happening?

Torque is rotational force in physics. With sticks, torque would be the blade twisting to the side when shooting. That's undesirable as it will change the path of the puck compared to where you're aiming.

Think of it as when your stick blade strikes the puck on a slap shot the shaft rotating enough to open the blade up, or push it to the right (for a right handed shooter). This is the undesirable effect of torque on a shaft during a hard shot.

I think I understand... does this explain why high flex sticks are "better" for wrist shots instead of slap shots? I assume because you're not loading (flexing) the stick up so much for a wrist shot as you would a slap shot?

So is this the direct result of having too much flex in a stick?

Thanks for the example Spreedizzle - is that a good indicator for too much torqueing? If I'm a RH shot, and my blade keeps opening up and veering right?

Your above conclusion is pretty much correct; lower flex (whippier) sticks are usually better for wristers and snap shots as you are applying less force to the stick and it flexes easier. As you are applying more force to slap shots, lower flex (whippier) sticks may load too much and you can lose power or feel for the puck.

Torque is more a function of shaft design. Whippier sticks should torque more, but certain brands or models will torque more or less. That's a feature of the new Stealth, to avoid torque.

watch the slow-motion portion where they use the machine to shoot. you'll see the blade lag behind the shaft then snap forward, resulting in a less controlled shot.

it's just after 8minutes in

The new S17 and 9kO have "innovative" features that reduce this twist.
