changing the profile of runners

Recommended Posts

i'm glad i finally joined this site. anyways...i just bought some new vector 10.0's. the first time i skated in them, i felt awkward and i was telling the guy at the proshop that the front part of the runner kept catching. he recommended that he shave some of the material off of the front of the runners. he did this manually using the sharpener. i think he took off too much. now i just want the original profile of the skate since i have gotten used to the skates. unfortunately i live in dallas texas and i don't think there are any shops around that have an experienced blade profiler. there are some shops that say you can mail them runners and they'll profile them for you. i'd like to get an unbiased opinion though. can they get the original profile back (the ccm factory profile)?

since the guy "profiled" my skates by just sharpening the front a lot, could they be profiled back to stock by simply sharpening the rear and middle portion?

thanks.

It depends on how much steel he took off the front. it's possible to regain the original profile, but you will lose some steel. If he took a lot off the front, you'll lose a lot of steel.

If you're used to the skates as they are, you're probably better off just sticking with them as-is. if he re-adjusts the profile, there will likely be another adjustment period where you'll feel a bit awkward again.

In my experience a profile change takes about two skates to get used to. Don't let that scare you off.

Exactly.

If he took off a lot of the front, you'll have to taka a lot of the the rest of the blade to get it back to how it was, thus drastically reducing the life of the steel. Whenever I'm profiling a blade I like to just take off small amounts at a time. The last thing you want to do is take it too far. How's that saying go" You can shave a sheep many times but skin it only once or something like that, you get the point.

Out of curiosity, if I wanted to do something utterly stupid like profile my player skates (13') to match my goalie skates (26') so I don't feel as weird switching between them, would I be taking off like half the remaining steel, or would it not be as bad as I think?

I can't come up with a geometrically sensible image to show myself what would happen.

It depends on how much "remaining steel" you have. I have seen it done once before and it ate up most of the steel. I never understood why either. If you want them to be like your goalie skates, why not just wear your goalie skates?
