Graf 707

Recommended Posts

I had an ankle injury several months ago and my left ankle is a bit odd in shape now. I've tried dozens of skates and have only found one that allows me skate pain free, the graf 707. Fortunately an old hockey coach had a pair he has let me borrow. They are size 8.5 R and fit perfect length wise.

They do hurt the front of my foot a bit when I skate, but I think it may be because they are either too narrow or there isn't enough arch support. I also think the heel is very wide, and the heel of my foot seems a bit loose. I previously wore Mission s500 10EE and before that Mission Amp Flyweight 10EE. I was expecting the s500 to last many years until I injured my ankle.

If I purchase a pair of Graf 707's, is there any way to make the heel narrower by punching it in? I've heard of punching skates to make them wider, but never to make them narrower. Also, is there any way to figure out if I need wide skates or not? I am worried, since the design of these skates makes the area around the foot very stiff, that if I get a wide skate my foot may be swimming in them, also making the heel even more loose.

I've tried to make this understandable. If it isn't, I apologize.

Its not that the heel is wide, but there is a lot of give in the ankle area of the Graf 707. Your best bet is a custom pair of 707s with the wide fore foot and a smaller heel if that is what makes you feel more comfortable. I skated in these for 5 years and they are NOT a beginner skate. Lots of ankle flexion. I doubt the heel would be wider in your size if you went to a wide, but your feet would not hurt as much in the toe box area.

I thouroughly understand that there is a lot more give in the ankle area. When I put these on for the first time a few weeks ago, I found out very quick that they weren't a beginners skate, and I quickly realized that they were an amazing skate. I swear it feels like I can get a complete stride out of these skates MUCH longer than before.

The only thing I don't enjoy is that my coach put TUUK custom+ on them, and my previous skates had Pitch Holders set at +1. I constantly feel like I am going to fall backwards.

I was thinking that maybe if I got these skates and the cobra holders are in more of a forward leaning stance, I wouldn't notice the heal width as much since I'd be leaning on my forefoot much more than my heels. what do you think?

One more thing, I've read a lot about putting new holes into the outsole to fit custom + holders. These skates have no new holes drilled, does that mean the custom + holders came stock? They do have graf hardware (screws in outsole, not rivets)

Any more opinoins/options of what I should do would really help.

Thanks to all that help, I just found this forum a few days ago and have learned a massive amount about skates that I never knew about.
