Heel Lifts vs Toe Down Blades

Recommended Posts

All - I have searched on both topics but didn't find the answer I was looking for. I have Easton Synergy 1500s with a neutral pitch, 5/8" hollow and a combo radius of 7'/14'. I'm 6'2", 215 lbs if that means anything ... I feel like I'm back on my heels and would like to make an adjustment, either with heel lifts or going with a slight toe-down in the blade. On sharp turns, it seems I have to try extra hard to get off my heels. My skating coach recommended that I might want to adjust the pitch.

I understand how the toe-down blade is achieved, but how do heel lifts work ? Is the blade holder adjusted or is the lift something that goes inside the skate ? Also, which method is preferable and will it change the combo radius I currently have. I play forward and D, depending on how many players show up any particular night.

heel-lifts are basically a thin layer of plastic or carbon installed between the holders and the outsole of the boot. as far as i know, you can go anywhere between 1mm of lift and a full centimeter. i think heel lifts would be a good way to go if you like the contour of your steel right now, and wouldn't want to run the risk of removing steel in excess. personally, i really liked the contour and radius of the Tuuk LS2 Power, but coming from CCM E-Pro holders, i found i needed a little bit of a pitch forward. i installed 2mm of lift in the heel, and noticed a huge improvement on my skating.

Blitz,

I don't think there's any real effective way to add anything to the insole. I mean, I'm on my third pair of Superfeet insoles, and those do a great job at aligning my foot, knee and hip on my stride, but they don't add any real lift inside the skate, imo. anyway, i don't think you'd ever really WANT to pitch yourself onto your toes inside the skate, because you'll probably run the risk of having your heel shift around, and it won't fit properly into the heelcup of the skate. in the boot, you'll want as much of the sole your foot evenly distributed across the insole of the boot. leave issues of pitch and rocker up to the outsole/holder/steel.

stealth s15's had a 2mm heel lift built into the insole and it was fine imo. if heel lock is a concern, rebake them after putting in the desired heel lift

Blitz,

as far as actual SHARPENING goes, there isn't really anything that can change your pitch. you'll have to get them Body Balanced (Contoured, Radiused, CAGged, Rockered, etc) to transfer your weight onto your toes. basic sharpening only really covers the hollow of your steel, i.e., how much you'll be gliding/how much you'll be biting into the ice.

...then again, many (but not all) sharpeners will have a tendency to put a little more pressure on the toe and the heel of your blade when running it through their sharpening machines. i've gotten requests from people to make a little more contact with the toe than the heel while sharpening, but overall i think this would be immediately negligible, since it takes at least 3-4 sharpenings before the contour of the steel will start to noticably change.

... or am i just talking out of my ass, and confusing you too much? :S

sorry man, hope i helped a little :D

Does anyone know the radius spec, profile or contour of a 296 mm LS2 Power blade (blue Zytel holder)??

I am trying to match another blade up to that. I've got an 11 foot that seems close - but not quite there.

Thanks

Anybody know any shops that I could possibly order lifts made for my type and size of holder? I'm looking to add 2mm to my One90s and nobody at any shop around me knows what I'm talking about. So I figured I could either get some elsewhere or make some of my own and just have them re-rivet the heels for me. If I have to resort to make my own, any suggestions on what type of material to use?

Heel/toe lifts: I thought about these, since I might need a set for my boots to lift the toe. Personally I would use aluminum.

We get hundreds of plates made for our water ski stuff, so it shouldn't be too hard to CAD something up & get a perfect shim made. It will be pricey since it is all custom cut/low volume. Something like $20 per shim.

The LS2 Powers have a lot of blade on the ice. I had to go to 5/8" hollow to make them work, but I like them. I suppose I can scan the blade and put an arc to it in CAD and see where I am sitting now.
