Ankle protector

Recommended Posts

I searched through this forum for a place to get the pronger-like ankle protectors.

I bought a used pair of baseball catcher leg pads and took the toe cap off and fixed it up to attach to the bottom of my shin pads. I have it off center to protect my bad side of my ankle.

I could put extra holes in the shinpads to move it around and center it if I'd like to.

I hope you guys like it.

Soooo???

How'd you attach that? I wouldn't mind trying to rig something up temporarily right now since I took a slapper off the ankle last night. Definitely wasn't the greatest feeling....

Well I bought the cheapest pair of used catcher leg guards I could find. I cut the toe protector off (but left the extra leather connected to it). I then undid all of the clips on the catcher equipment, cut one very short, and sewed it onto that peice of leather.

I ended up drilling an oval hole into the bottom of the shinpad, and that clip that was on the catcher equipment fits perfectly into the hole i drilled.

I really had no idea how I was going to attach it to the shinpad, and then it just clicked. My sewing work doesn't look too great, the machine couldn't handle the thick material. I recommend taking it to a shoe repair store and they have machines that will handle the material.

I'll probably do up the other one just in case I end up busting up my other ankle too.

I hope that explanation helped.

there are a couple of protectors on ebay right now.

I didn't see any. .. what did you search for?

it looks like that would actually work pretty well - but does it flap around at all? because that would be distracting to me when im skating hard

I really have not noticed any flapping. I guess I just didn't pay attention. I'll try to pay a bit more attention and get back to you tomorrow when I skate again.

Nice, it will really help. In fact you might try a more centered position. I have a pair of Itech shin pads that have the extra pad centered over the laces and its surprising how much they help even with shots to the side.

I get a lot of crap about wearing catcher's pads, but I love those shin pads and I wish I could buy another pair.

Those arn't very similar to mine. I'd think those would hinder your forward flexion while skating. The one I made hangs in the proper spot without having any effect on skating.

Also, I skated with it again today, didn't notice it at all while skating. Its working out great. I still havn't gotten hit by a puck though, so that'll be the majore test.
