Can honing affect bite angle?

Recommended Posts

I had my skates sharpened to a very shallow hollow, but wanted them shallower still. When I went back, the sharpener said that he couldn't go any shallower (#1 on a Dupliskate), but that he would get the LHS owner to hone my blades because he has a different honing technique.

The next time on the ice the blades felt perfect.

How did they do it? Is there a different honing technique the affects the blades' bite angle? That way maybe I can adjust the bite angle with my honing stone.

Did the LHS owner break more of the curl-over with his technique?

If you angle the stone ever so slightly when de-burring, you can produce quite a nice edge. Similar in concept to the sweet stick. But you can't do this with the miriclestone - rolls the edges over quickly. I use something similar to these that I found in the blademaster catalogue - it's the last picture on the list; "diamond sharpener"

I like to tune the tips of the edges by 3-5 degrees with the honing stone. it just makes for a nice clean edge. It does nothing to the hollow or bite angle as far as shallowing it out. If anything it would increase it. But a honing stome on a stainless blade doesn't do much other than to smooth the edges and remove small burrs. Unless you can move that honing stone at 3800 rpm, with stainless, your not going to have much effect.

I think the LHS owner deburred and tuned the edges, like you two said. The last time, the hollow looked right but there seemed to be an extra burr along the inside of each edge. Thanks; I will try that next time.
