cheap skates for a newbie.

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm an ice player for starters so I don't know anything about inline skates. I just moved to a new apartment and I noticed down the street there is an outdoor rink at the park so I figured I'd take advantage of that and get some skates so I can go out there and shoot around. I'm really looking to get something under $100.. durability isn't really an issue as I don't think I'll be playing pick up games or a league or any of that.. I just want to be able to skate around. I was looking at inlinewarehouse and they have these nb mega 5090 skates for $99, also I've seen on hockeygiant they have 40-70's for $80.. I don't know how the inlines work for sizing so they only come in a 'R'? I normally wear an E or EE in my other skates. I also looked at the Mission He1500 and HE3500.. would they be any good? if it matters, on ice I currently use vapor xxv in a 7.5EE I'm going down to hockeygiant on thursday so I'll be able to try on some stuff if they have it in my size, I just wanted to have some knowledge prior to going down there so I'm not at the mercy of the clerk who get the skates out from the stock room.

as much as you'd like some cheap cheap skates, from my experience it can only lead to bad foot pain and possibly worse. I recommend the Mission Wicked 7's. They're on clearance now in many online stores so if you can find your size grab them. they'll be about $150 and WELL worth the money.

Hi matt!!!

Heres my suggestion. seriously consider whether buying something cheap is a good idea. You play ice, with no thought of playing league inline. I would say get a boot as similar as you a wearing now, and put a "SPRUNG" frame under it, they are great for Ice players, as close to mimicking ice as you will ever get!!!

that's kind out out of his price range, don't you think? he just wants to skate around, it isn't a big deal if his inline skates don't mimic the feel of ice skates.

Matt: for what you want, any of those skates would be fine.

ok.. great thanks dcott.. yeah I looked into those sprung frames and they alone cost about as much as I wanted to spend. i know most of the time even beginners wouldn't be advised to buy the bottom end skate, but for my purposes I don't think they will inhibit me at all. and plus, if I end up taking up roller than I can always upgrade somewhere down the road. online, it seems that wide width and half size skates are only available in the high end options (vector 10s, rbk 8ks, etc).. I'm hoping the brick n mortar locations have more variety.

i play ice as well as a lot of street hockey on skates I similpy went to a local sporting good store and picked up a pair of skates that were around $100 and they have lasted me since I was 16 and I'm 20 now, and they are still going. I just have to replace the wheels every couple of months or skates depending how many times a week I play street. They are some Mission pair thats what I used to use when I played roller.

Hapamatt, If possible go to your local PIAS and shop around in the used skates section. Some pretty good older model used skates can be had for cheap. That way, you can still get the support of a higher end inline skate.

I bought a cheap pair (CCM Vector 4.0s) to skate on outside at a local rink and after about an hour the 1/4s on the skates were spaghetti. Very flimsy.

yup. i bought Vector 4.0's and they are terrible skates. flimsy, and bend all over the place, no support and killed my feet.
