What do you do to prepare for fitness testing?

Recommended Posts

This afternoon we have a beep test. Basically what it is, is a test where you run 20 meters and stop, then run back to the starting line. But the key is, you have to make it in each beep, which is timed, and it progressively gets faster. If I remember correctly there is 10 beeps per level, and they get faster and faster. My best is level 10, after a full hockey season and season of training. My most recent beep test was up to a level 9, the first beep test of the season and I only ran 5 times prior to this, since May, and this was October. So I'm thinking I can shatter my record of 10, this afternoon, but I don't know how I should prepare for this.

Should I go in cold, without any warm up? Should I jog a bit before hand? As far as eating, I've only eaten two granola bars today, for breakfast, and only drank water so far today. I have 2 and a half hours until I run it and I'm pretty hungry right now. Not sure what to do. I usually run like crap on a full stomach, with cramps coming in less than 5 minutes. I'm thinking if I have a light lunch, then running should be no problem, as long as I drink water this afternoon.

What do you guys usually do to prepare?

If you're just doing the beep test, some light walking, then a light jog, then some stretching to warm up should be fine. If you're going to be doing other tests, such as blood pressure, heart rate, body fat percentage, etc., you should talk to whoever's doing the assessment on what to do. I've been taught and told not to exercise a day or so before the tests, and to avoid eating, smoking, caffeine before the test, as to not skew results. Since you're just doing the beep test, a light lunch, and a light warm up before hand should be sufficient.
