Shaving the sides of a Wood Stick

I read that you could do that to make the stick flexible. I was wondering if you guys had any tips for me doing this.

In my experience, which was shaving down Sherwood 5030 PIMP's, it made them flexier yes, but also brittle in a way. Mine all broke within 2 games, and I was a small roller hockey player back then.
