OT and shootouts

Recommended Posts

I like the OT and shootouts but i think its kinda cool but I am also a traditionalist and like games just ending with ties no OT or any other bullshit, if you can't get it done in regulation you shouldn't get a chance to get 2 points...however i don't see the current OT and shootout going anywhere because lets face it you like to see star players razzle and dazzle which is kinda neat in its own way, but what i don't like is that the score stays the same through the shootout no matter how many goals are scored, i think if you are going to have a shootout the goals scored should count toward stats, i mean come on the goals scored by the player help the team win like pretty much any goal scored during regulation. I could see where some people would say that it is an unfair advantage for certain players getting opportunities to score more and whatever, but they are professional athletes for pete's sake life isn't fair and i don't think this creates any kind of advantage, besides teams using their star players more in shootouts making it more exciting and creating a bigger fan base which is what the nhl wanted right?....what do you guys think?

if that happens, it should effect goalie stats too which has a huge disadvantage on the goalie because it's a shootout.

I'd also like to see overtime be atleast 10 minutes long atleast, 5 minutes seems too little

Stats shouldn't count in a shootout. The scenario is so much different than regular play that it wouldn't be reasonable to count them. It just doesn't make sense.

I'm personally against the shootout, but maybe I'd like it if the Bluejackets didn't suck at it.

i meant that everyone's stats would be effected....and i dont think goalies stats would greatly effected they pretty much stop a lot of the shots...

false. what about the good amount of goalies who have like a .900 save percentage? they only stop about half of the shootout shots, so it would go down. and how could you include shootout goals in the GAA stats? GAA is goals over minutes played times 60 minutes. Shootouts could only raise GAA, because there is statistically no minutes played in a shootout, only goals against.

shootouts wouldn't effect GAA because there is no way to keep that stat like you said but it would only effect shots against, shots saved, goals allowed and save percentage....whats the point of having a shootout to decide a winner if the stats don't count, they count in OT

I think it's only 5 because they would have to clean the ice after the 3rd.

In OT, they are actually playing hockey. A shootout is just a tiebreaker and nothing else.

They do clean the ice, but only down the middle.

EDIT: Sorry, thought you were talking about after the overtime

first of all it's a huge (unfair) advantage for the star players. Young guys looking to make a name for themselves would have no chance if all the superstars were having shootout goals count towards overall goal totals. Second of all it would be unfair to current record holders like Gretzky, who would see their goal records go down. 3rd of all a goalie's save percentage would plummet. It's not fair for goalies or record holders to have skilled forwards, getting to take breakaways, with no pressure on them from backcheckers, and have that count towards their goal total.

dude no one would even come close to The Great One's records as far as i can remember the highest point total was 12 years ago by Le Magnifique with 161 i don't really think that skaters stats would increase and goalies stats decrease that dramatically ...why and how would it be unfair, shootouts usually end with 2 or 3 goals scored

i feel its a shame that a hard fought 5 periods of team hockey come down to a shoot out. save the shootout for playoff games where there has to be a decisive victory. ties were ok. sometime both teams put out tremendous effort...plus it made it different than many other professional sports.

it's seems to me that the only real reason it got implemented was to end games faster so whatever is on after the game gets its slot. makes it more "network friendly" if the NHL is pushing to get games on the main networks like nbc, abc, etc.
