CONGRATS.....what an awesome feeling for both your son and yourself.

Using a Synergy 200 cut down to that length.....it still weighs about 2lbs. :D

It's a junior synergy....it was red......it's his favorite color....it was his birthday....he has gone through 3 surgeries on his feet to get the point where he could even walk....so I thought he could get a little reward for all his efforts thus far.

Poor little guy.....what did he have to have done to his feet? Does he now need custom skates to fit properly??

He was born with bi-lateral clubfoot.....1 procedure o his Achilles tendon and 2 procedures on his feet, having to to with his tendons on the top of his feet.

We contacted CCM and they were generous enough to make him two different size skates to accommodate the brace he wears on his right foot, at no extra charge.

Is the brace permanent or a temporary support until his foot fully heals and truly begins to grow within it's new proportions.

You have one tough cookie for a son. To go through all of that and want to stuff his tender feet into stiff hockey skates.....he gets my highest degrees of admiration. :D

It is a modified AFO "ankle foot orthosis"

You see it in use alot for Cerebral Palsy kids.

It is basically a custom molded piece of high density plastic that has been molded to his foot and runs up the back of his leg and is attached with velcro around his calf.

We had to go a full size and a 1/2 larger for his right skate to accomodate the brace.

If you look closely in the picture you can see that he actually has two different models of skate. His left one is a Vector 10.0 and the right one is a Vector 6.0

I like the kid with the white helmet, looks like he's got size 15 laces for his size 2 skates.

What a great experience for both you! My parents were never the type to spare no expense for sports- I never played anything that required more than cleats and a cup.

Is he on a youth team or in a league or did he just kinda get randomly put into the game? The sizes and ages of the kids looks like they vary quite a bit.

Is this something that he will have to wear permanently, or will he outgrow it as his body grows and strengthens? Sorry to probe.....but quite fascinating and brave for such a young guy.

I helped the kid with the white helmet get dressed in the locker room....his parents put baby powder on all of his equipment and I had to wrap the laces 3 times around his ankles. They were new waxed laces also...took me forever to get them loosened up enough to get his feet in them.

All of those kids, with the exception of the goalies, are in a program called scooter pond hockey....just a hour long scrimmage game for the kids to get a feel of playing on a team....no positioning is taught....just have fun.

They are all mite ages.

My wife and I put the game together for them....A unique experience for kids that young as the teams that usually play at the United Center are much older...

I work at the United Center, so I was able to fast track this a little bit....we pulled it off in under a month of planning.

Total cost involved was 4K...

As a team,we had to buy 200 tickets for that nights game at $20....that entitled us to the game for the kids..goodie bags and jerseys for the kids and then seats in the 300 level for that nights Blackhawks game.

We had enough kids in the class to field two teams with two lines of 5 per team.

your goalie looks like a tank lol. Did your son enjoy the game?

1 assist and a shot on goal.

Nice. What curve is he using... :P

Glad it was fun for both. Going to Flyers games I love seeing the young kids(Mites on Ice) play. He is a brave soul. Hope he does well with future hockey.

Just FYI.....

I heard from a little birdie at the UC the other day that the NHL is putting restrictions on ice access next season.

No one with the exception of ice crew may be on the ice 3 hours prior to game time.

So this eliminates the Junior Hawks program from Chicago since we are a dual sport facility.

Apparently there have been allot of complaints from players throughout the league about ice conditions.

IMO, the only people who should be complaining about ice conditions are players in mens league... Ice varies around here from rink to rink.

That stinks for the kids though...

How bad can kids cut the ice up? The pros probably do more damage in the pre-game skate than a bunch of 8 year olds can do in an hour.

some pros are just fussy, everytime they have a bad day they'll blame something else ... really crappy...

great to see kids play. I love watching kids during a scrimmage game. I was in the US earlier this year, and stopped to watch a kids game. Much different from here in Australia and back home (basically non existent in Singapore, all parents shun the expensive costs for sports but would pay huge amounts of money for their kids to have additional study classes).
