12 fucking years? wtf is going on NHL??

This prevents teams like Edmonton from driving up salaries with crazy offer sheets for restricted free agents.

I think we're going to see more of these deals for pending RFA's, at least until Lowe is fired in Oil country.

Its awfully hard to say how much higher the cap is going to rise over the coming years, but man that is such a risk to sign a player for what basicly amounts to a career length contract. Sure if he has a great career and the cap keeps going up your all set, On the other hand if the player doesn't pan out or gets hurt you've screwed your self.

I think the part that bothers me the most is, say he plays awesome for 4 years- and then gets hurt, comes back and isn't the same. They should be stuck with the contract for 8 more years with 8 years of cap hit. Instead Philly is a big $$$ team and wouldn't have a problem buying out his contract, small market teams on the other hand simply can't.

If Philly buys out his contract with 8 years left on it then they get stuck with a cap hit of 1/2 the average annual salary for 16 years.
