Hockeystores in Vancouver

Recommended Posts

Don't forget Ice Level Sports in Richmond, which (if relevant) is fairly close to the airport (and one of the smaller Cyclone locations is in a rink that is about a mile down the road from Ice Level, so you could hit both stores at one time). I've never been to The Hockey Store, but Ice Level has way better selection than Cyclone and the Jung brothers are the only guys who sharpen my skates or fix my equipment. And I find their staff to be much more knowledgeable than Cyclone. Ice Level is a bit more expensive, but worth it to me to support the smaller store.

Bumping this up so I don't have to start a new thread. I'm gonna be in Vancouver soon and I want to go to all three shops. Cyclone Taylor, Sports Exchange, and The Hockey Shop. If I don't have time to get to all three though, which should I consider going to first? Which one has the most selection, if it comes down to picking just one shop? I'm thinking the Hockey Shop probably, but it'd be nice to hear from people that have been there.

Depends which area you're going to be. If I had to choose only one I'd go to The Hockey Shop in Surrey. They've got the biggest selection I've ever seen locally and everything is well priced. I just don't go there as often because Cyclones is more convenient for me.

Just a heads up for everyone too, there's a new shop called Mainland Athletics just off Nanaimo and Broadway in Vancouver. It's a very small ma and pop shop but they're owned by nice people. I splurged and bought ONE90 elbows from them...

Do they just mainly have protective gear at Mainland or are there sticks too?

They don't have much selection compared to the other shops. I was in the market for new elbows so I decided to check it out while I was in the neighborhood. The shop only had two elbow pads in my size, the Itech 655 and the ONE90 which I bought. I wish there were more elbow pads I could try on but the ones I found ones I liked so I bought them anyway.

I didn't really look at the sticks but I saw some Warriors and Eastons. It doesn't look like they have alot to choose from with sticks either. The shop seems to carry mid-top of the line gear. It's only been open for a month so I guess they're still getting settled in.

Thanks for the answers. If I get the chance, I'll go to the Hockey Shop for sure. How come I keep reading about Surrey having a lot of crime? Is it really that bad?

Yes. My cousin's car got broken into in broad daylight at the skytrain station. But then again Vancouver is becoming pretty bad nowadays, with the club shootings, public mall stabbings and suicides off bridges.

I'd say The Hockey Shop will have the most equipment. That place is huge. Cyclone is where I normally go just because I've gotten to know some of the guys very well and their service as been top notch. As far as Ice Level goes, I have to say while the prices may be a bit high, Russ does a great job there and is extremely knowledgeable.

If you have to pick one shop for selection in the Vancouver area, it has to be The Hockey Shop. I am amazed at how much inventory they have in their store. It is in a fairly bad area of town. That being, said I have never had a problem in all the times that I have been there. Their lot is fairly small and if you park up close to the shop, I think it is pretty risky for car thieves to attempt something on your car, because it is so close to the store front. However, Vancouver does have a lot of car theft as evidenced by this Video So be careful when going into areas like the one surrounding the Hockey Shop. Gotta love those Lower Mainland criminals.

There's been some pretty shady stuff going down around the store's area but only after hours. In broad daylight the area around the store is pretty safe and there's lots of people around going to school and what not.

I shop at Ice Level Sports in Richmond and I am usually pleased with their amount of stock. They aren`t a superstore by any means but they have good service and I haven`t had a bad experience their yet.

I'm sure we'll be fine when we go there. We're staying in downtown Vancouver by GM Place, so I was thinking about taking the Sky Train to Surrey, but if I go crazy with my credit card I don't wanna have to lug the stuff back with me. I guess the worst thing that happens is the car gets stolen while I'm inside shopping?? I'll just leave my friend to watch the car while I look at stuff. We'll take shifts until we're done.

Oh come on - that place isn't that bad! I'm in the area pretty much every day & haven't had any issues so far - besides - THS is a bit further away from the skytrain station (where if anywhere weird stuff might happen), and the parking is right in front of it - seems pretty safe to me

you could take the train down to Surrey Central and walk like 3 minutes and you're there

if you drive, just pull in to the parking lot.. The worst anyone will do to you is ask you for change and walk away but they tend to leave customers alone 99.99% of the time.

It's like people are scared of Surrey or something

And they should be! jk

Nah, despite all the horror stories, that area is alright. It's definately worth the drive/skytrain ride over to the hockeyshop. they do a good job of taking care of ya. plus their selection is probably the best you'll get here in the lower mainland.

If your staying by GM Place you are close to the sports exchange which has an excellent selection of prostock sticks for quite cheap. If you are looking for sticks definately check them out
