wheel rotations?

Recommended Posts

how often should i rotate my wheels? what would be a good test to determine how much the wheels have worn down? i'm new to rollerblades. also, what does a hi-lo chassis acheive as opposed to a flat one?

For wheel rotations, it depends on how much and how hard you skate. I check my wheels for wear pretty much after every skate, but that's just eyeballing them holding up my skates. Rotate them every 5 skates or so, or whenever you see appreciable wear after a skate. Hi-Lo chassis employ basic principles of physics, which I unfortunately have forgotten, so I'll sum up- the larger wheels contribute to speed and acceleration, and teh smaller ones to maneuverability and control. Overall, having smaller wheels in front allow manufacturers to make the skate with a more forward lean without raising the boot, which would therefor raise your center of gravity and make you less balanced. The extra forward lean keeps you more on your toes, making it easier for most people to make that toe pushoff at the end of their stride that gives you extra power. Trust me, they're a good thing...

I think it also depends on the type of surface you skate on and the durometer of the wheels you use. I skate on sport court (x-soft) and outdoor asphalt tennis court surfaces. (hard durometer)

I find that I need to rotate my wheels after playing 4 or 5 games on sport court w/ x-soft wheels and every 2-3 times on the tennis court surface. The x-soft wheels tend to lose their stickiness fairly quickly, especially on sport court floors that don't get cleaned too often.

Hope this helps and I'm not getting too deep into the details. :D

thanks for the help, i'm just using my rollerblades outside to practice and skate a bit when i'm not playing ice, i just got a little scared when i was fooling around with my skates on day, and i put it on a table and noticed that 1 of the wheels weren't touching the table... (it was a middle one)
