Advantages of a stiff skate

Recommended Posts

Like he said - better support, better cornering (supposedly - but this likely ties in with the better support), better protection from shots, typically last longer but also as he said, not for everyone. Stiff boots are a monster to "break in" (and it could be argued that it's more your foot getting used to the boot than the other way around), are prone to being more uncomfortable, more likely to have poor forward flex, etc.

So, again as will be the life long mantra here, it's all personal preference.

Although... if you're a bigger/stronger dude, you'd likely want a stiffer skate for the support/longevity issue. If you're smaller, I'd go with the comfort factor of something a little less rigid.

Stiffer skates don't break down as quickly, and are more responsive.

Depending on your weight and skill level, a skate that is too stiff can hurt your skating. You have to be able to flex the skate, if it is too stiff you can't get a good edge.

178 is not really "big" when you're talking about needing a stiff skate, but weight shouldn't really be the only factor considered when you're looking at softer or stiffer skates. Also, only improper or excessive baking will result in loss of stiffness. The purpose of baking is to help mold the skate to the shape of your foot.

It depends more on your skating ability than size...If you have ever taken any power skating classes, or you have just been skating for a long time and have perfected your technique then a stiff skate may be right for you. I am 5'11 165 and I skate in a Graf Ultra G5...relatively stiff boot, and it works a lot better for me than other skates I have skated in.
