Rustyhole 1 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 Well, 3 years old is kind of late to be starting your boy in hockey but we'll let that slide :) I've heard that young kids, 2-3 should be handed a stick (outside) and told to spin around. Supposedly they will spin in the direction of the dominant, stronger side they will be most comfortable shooting on.lol, 3 years old is kind of late? are you kidding me?a few kids i know who went high up in the dub draft didnt start untill they were 5 or 6pretty sure he's being funny, hence the :); ;)
rubberduckie 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 Sounds like son is lucky to have a dad who wants to get him involved in a great sport. If I can make a suggestion, it's that before you get him all involved with the puck and stick and all that jazz, make sure he learns to skate well!Truer words have never been spoken. Some public skating time and possibly some skating lessons in a couple years would be the most important thing. As someone who use to teach power skating and 'canskate' (teaching young kids how to skate) as well as ref young levels of hockey, skating well is truly the most important aspect of hockey. I can't stress that enough, and it can not be underestimated. It is what really separates the good players from just the players, especially in the younger leagues. ramensandwich 1 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 mm this sounds like fun. best of luck!whether or not your son becomes any good at hockey, i'm sure he will enjoy doing it just to be with you, and yall will build some nice memories during his childhood.then, when he gets about 13, you can lay the ol' hip check on him and show him you're still boss
92hatchattack 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 ^^^ HAHA, i actualy laid a little check on him when he was chasing me around trying to slash me the other day (aparently to him thats as much fun as hitting the ball) ... LOL, he hit the ground and just kinda looked at me like WTF???, then proceeded to get up and chase me with the stick again. Little kids dont learn.I dont really want to go trying to stick him into skating lessons or any sort of formal training at this point. I was it to be fun for him, and ill wait till he comes to me and says he wants to take lesons or play with a team. I want him to play because he wants to play, not because i want him to play..... if he ends up not wanting to, oh well no big deal.. but if he does want to when he's 5 or 6, hopefully i will have given him a little advantage starting him at home early. LkptTiger 1 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 There's really no mathematic equation to figure this out.I first started getting myself into the sport when I was 3. Once I got the rest of my gear situated, my dad handed me a WinWell with a straight blade; I grabbed it with my left hand on top and threw my right hand down on the shaft.I've been a righty ever since. First rink I made, boards started to heave as it filled with water-tires/cinder blocks improvised to hold it together till it froze. We since moved that hot tub for width and go right to the fence....about 55x32 feet, and now it seems only I shovel! Keep young kids away from crowds to start and they'll gain confidence quickly.
