Hurt shoulder, need some help.

Recommended Posts

2 weeks ago I got cross checked into the boards. My shoulder went straight in. I finished playing the game, but after that the pain started to get worse. I decided to go to the doctor the next day. They took a couple of x rays then the lady made me move it around. She said it could be a bad bruise or something along those lines, told me to let it heal and then I could start playing again. They gave me 7 codeine and I was on my way. I used up the medicine pretty fast and I went back, they told me the lady that looked at my shoulder only works when they need her. So in that case I would have to get a new check up for someone to subscribe me the same medicine. I was upset at this and just left. I have been on the ice passing and shooting, it doesn't hurt while I do that. But I can't push people around or hit or really take a hit. I don't think my shoulder has gotten any better yet. The worst is at night when I try to sleep, I can't lay on that side, or roll over and it is a bitch every time that I have to get up. Pushing on my shoulder there isn't any spots where it hurts such as a bruise, I can move my arm in a circle and stretch it with just slight pain. Another thing is I can't really take a back hander, that kills the most. I don't know what to do. I have 3-4 weeks of hockey left and I want to finish the games out. But I want my shoulder to heal so I can play at 100%. Has anyone had any other situations like this, or can someone help me out? Thanks.

It sounds like soft tissue damage that cannot be seen well on xrays. If you have full range of motion you probably have some muscle tears/pulls. That will be painful for quite some time, but most likely will not do further damage to keep useing. Use lots of IceyHot, and keep the thing loose. Antiinflamatories/muscle relaxants will help too. Icing it after games and work outs may assist in masking the pain, and cutting down on any deep muscle inflamation (not necessarily apparent upon visual inspection).

This in no way is meant to take the place of the advice of your doctor in which you should seek the counsel of first and foremost. It is impossible to specifically diagnose properly over a message board. This info might help you in understanding and communicating to your personal physician.

My daughter has some similar issue in her knee that is still tender after 6 months. Much better, but still tender.

although my 1st recommendation would be to seek out the opinion of an orthopeadic doc, if you are set on going chiropractic route, see if you can find a doc locally who is A.R.T. certified. It stands for Active Release Therapy, and is kinda like chiropractic for the whole body. It's desinged to help re-allign jionts other than the spine, and will help break up scar tissue with deep-tissue massage....I had something similar to your injury, and ended up with a torn labrum. had surgery to correct it, but after 6months, it still felt like dookie. I tried out ART and in 3 weeks, I was back to 100%......

Just let it heal man, or you may be facing something five times worse in the future. I now have a permanently damaged right ankle because I wanted to be a tough guy, sounds fun huh? My right ankle is permanently larger and weaker than my left ankle.

Thanks again for the info guys. This week when I find time I am going to get this taken care of. Should I go to a better hospital and tell them that I think it is tissue damage or something along those lines, so they can make sure I dont need surgery if something is torn. Or will a Chiro/Ortho be able to do the same thing for me? I just want to make sure this isn't going to bother me in the future and I just want it to heal. thanks again.

same thing happened to me! 2 weeks ago, i went to the doctor, he told me that i pulled the tendons and ligaments in my shoulder. I started doing physio on it and i found that this helped immensly, although he recommended when im playing to use a wood stick, because the vibrations from a OPS keep my shoulder "apart" and keep it from healing completely, dunno if this was bs or not, but it does hurt getting a pass etc. do some physio tho, it will help, and lift a light (5kg) dumb bell behind your head, that helps to.

The number of muscle attachments in the shoulder area means that even a slight bruise could feel like a tear, a tendon rupture, or something similarly painful. It's also possible to have developed bursitis as a result of the impacted area as well, which is something to keep in mind.

Obviously without a full medical exam on the area it's impossible to diagnose exactly what's going on, so make sure to follow up with a qualified specialist.
