Back to the wood blade!

Recommended Posts

After using OPS for the last 2 years, I cut down a snergy and popped in a crosby sherwood 950 blade. Absolutely love it, the composite blade can not do justice to the feeling the wood blade gives you. Even though it is a 2-piece, it felt so much better. I haven't used a 2 piece in a while, but I was really blown away by the different feel. I really feel the puck better, and my shot isn't really different to my knowledge.

On a side note... did sherwood change the crosby pattern to something else. There were 2 different 'crosby' patterns at my LHS, one which looked very similar to the havlat pattern. Was it just a mis-labeling?

Another side note... can anyone recommend some good 2 piece shafts, the snergy may work for now, but I think I want to explore this road further. I have always liked the freedom of the 2 piece when I was younger, but have had a break from hockey for 4 years, and been using OPS's the last couple, so I am a bit out of date when it comes to them.

I recommend looking into tapered shafts if you want a shaft that performs like a OPS. I haven't used alot of models but I really like my old TPS R2.

Yes the Crosby pattern has changed, and is only called the PP87 pattern, as Crosby went to using RBK sticks. Anyhow the new crosby or SA Crosby curve is similar to the Sakic curve, this is the curve I have been using.

When it comes to stick shafts, here's what I have and what I have found to work good for me. Afterall everything for each player is personal preference. I have an RBK 7k Sick kick with tappered blade ( sherwood SA Crosby), also have Sherwood Momentum XD shaft ( non tappered) and a sherwood RM19 shaft. I personally prefer the Sherwood shafts to the RBK, I have found sherwood products to be durable, and to have good performance.

I just switched back to wood blades as well. I have a tapered dolomite shaft and a tapered TPS Adrenaline OPS turned shaft. My LHS had a good deal on some older Bauer 7500 tapered blades so I bought all of the P106's they had.

As Kramer would say "it's the wood that makes it good"

I did the same last night. Bought a RBK 7K Sickick with a Easton wood blade. The owner of the LHS said he prefers adults coming from wood sticks and buying into the lighter stick technology to transition to wood blades/composite shafts. Wood has a much better "feel" and he also said I probably wouldnt like how the puck hits the blade on a OPS shaft. I bought an OPS stick as well, but I'll take my time getting used to it.

There were two different Crosby sherwood patterns is what I meant. Perhaps it was just a mis-label as only one 'crosby' curve looked different from the rest. Is the RM19 a tapered shaft? My LHS isn't exactly stocked with product, so is the sherwood shafts very boxy?

I should have explained better. In some model sticks and blades they have the SA PP0687 or something like that which is the sakic clone, then they have the standard PP0687 which is the heel curve you. The shafts arent too boxy, the have more rounded edges for better feel.

If you've liked your synergy as a ops, I suggest maybe a synergyII tapered shaft, or even a synthesis if theres some around. I too am actually waiting for my sl to break to get back into wood blades, can't bring myself to buy anymore sticks at the moment tho is all. SynergyII or even the trusty ultralite is my next choice for sure.
