Shin guards - fitting question

Recommended Posts

I'm in my n00b stage of getting my first gear. I got the Rbk 5k shin guards 16". When I put them on the top strap (which goes around somewhere near my knee joint) doesn't tighten as much as I'm assuming it's supposed to. Is it supposed to be real tight? I have chicken legs so it wouldn't be a problem with the shin guard, I'm just worried this will be a problem. I don't have hockey socks yet, so is this how it's supposed to be and the sock will hold the guard in place better and keep it from sliding down my leg? Shit.

The straps on my shin guards have never kept my shins as tight as I like them. I just bought a pair of the velcro straps that go around the whole guard. That is what I use.

That's brilliant. haha. I wouldn't have thought of that. Where did you get those velcro straps?

a lot of people use clear hockey tape to get the fit they want out of their shin pads, some go as far as to completley remove the straps and rely solely on the tape

Oh ok. I have seen that tape. People normally tape over the sock right?

Possibly could be your straps. I have some pretty skinny calves right now too and i can never get it tight enough just using straps. Pretty much always have to tape them. They also have these spandex type sleeves that you can use to hold your shinpads in place.

right over the sock, at any part that is most comfortable, but mostly the joint in the pad just below the knee... really PP though

I allways remove that upper strap on my Jofa/RBK's as I don't like the feeling of it and there's no need for it since I allways tape my shins in place.

Velcro straps are underneath the sock...and because of that, when you are pulling up the sock you can possibly pull the velcro out of place. It's much easier IMO to put the pad on, put the sock over it, get it in place, and tape it with clear tape.
