nbh 8500 vs. easton stealth s17 helmet

Recommended Posts

OK, I've been wearing a NBH 8000 (which is practically identical to the 8500 I believe) with a 8500 cage for 2 yrs now. I've always liked the look of the 8000/8500 and the cage, and the helmet is built very very solid/protective and the adjustments (Occipital Lock, Side Adjustment, Tool Free Adjustment) work as advertised. My complaints are:

1- 8000/8500 is heavier than most hi-end helmets (RBK 8K or CCM Vector)

2- The 8500 cage is heavy too

3- I find the 8000 a bit bulky and not as low profile

4- My head seems to get really warm and I can actually feel the foam in the helmet heating up...

I had a chance to try on a S17 helmet at Hockeymonkey and right off the bat I can tell you that the helmet is much lighter and feels lighter on my head than 8000/8500 (weight is comparable to RBK 8k, maybe even lighter) and the one-hand size adjustment worked just fine, if not better than the two-hand 8000/8500 style. S17 is also a much lower profile helmet and basically smaller sized. The 'dial' that tightens the fit, similar to the 8k, works MUCH BETTER than the 8k. The dial actually gets the helmet tight around your head.

I personally will purchase the S17 when it comes out and would like to check out the easton cage that you're supposed to pair it with... or maybe see if the NBH 9500 is any good and also see if 9500 cage will fit the S17...
