I hate plastic J-clips. The ones I have on my Intake are metal ones - old and rusted from some old cage I had a long time ago. I am constantly looking for some brand new metal ones but no one seems to sell them anymore.

no, the distance of the holes on all helmets an j clips are standard, so any j clips will do

What are they good for?

They keep the cage from going too far towards your face if something pushes on it, maybe to help protect your face, or to disperse force into the helmet instead of your face?

The CCM J-clips (right above your post) are metal.

I was certain until you posted that. I have two Jofa 690 combos, and they both came with the metal clips, but I guess they make/sell both.
