Minnesota High School Hockey

Recommended Posts

Even for high school teams? I know it works that way in Jr.A+ but i wasn't to sure about high school.

Also what is high school hockey in MN compared to in Canadian hockey (aaa, highschool,jr.A)?

I'm not sure how it compares, but I'm guessing the systems are completely different along with the traditions. In Minnesota a lot of the best kids play HS hockey and then play Junior after the season is over. Many of the other states dont have their best players playing HS, but prep or Midget AAA..(Team Illinois) etc..I'm guessing if Minnesota put together a Team Minnesota Midget AAA, comprised of their best HS kids, it would be a pretty good team rivaling Shattuck St Mary. The top tier Minnesota HS teams are stocked with kids who will end up playing on the US National Development Team or Junior teams after the season or the year following graduation.

In the 2006 draft, 3 of the top 20 draft picks were 17-18 yr old MN kids.

In the 2007 draft, the #12 pick (Montreal) was a MN HS kid from Cretin Derham Hall. There were two kids from MN drafted straight from the HS ranks in the 1st two rounds..

Here are the prospects for the 1st round of the NHL draft. At least 2 of them are currently in MN high schools and another is in the USHL but from Edina, MN.

Private schools don't seem to be a very good choice for me since I will allready have my grade 12. So if I went to St.Marys I would basically be paying $40,000 for hockey and maybe 2 classes in school. I basically did what Ness did and went ahead of everyone in school.

If you're already done with school (or will be at the end of this year), I don't see how (or why) you would play high school hockey here.

I wouldn't push your D-1 dreams. I've seen a lot of friends and teammates play two years of juniors (USHL or a league below that), only to be given a walk-on commitment to a terrible team/school. Although they still made it, after a year or two of sitting in the press box, they either quit or didn't make the team when new guys came in. Now they're two years behind all their friends, don't know what school they'll go to or if they'll play hockey, and still don't really have any idea of what kind of career they want after hockey.

I'd think about playing D-III...the hockey is still very good, you'll still get a good education, and most of those guys are still "big men on campus" if that matters to you.

Because I can still take extra courses to get extra credits.

Guy, the odds of a high school prep team taking an "overage" kid whos got his grade 12 are next to zero. I would consider another route. What part of Canada are you from
