Stampede#11 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2008 I only play inline now, I'm RH playing LD. I find that when a RH winger is coming down the side, being RH seems to put them off cutting in more and encourages them to stay on the outside to take a bad angled shot.A LH'er coming down the board is horrible as they will cut to the middle, i'll go for a poke check, they'll shoot and i'll end up with a nose bleed!!! sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2008 I think there are advantages and disadvantages. As stated. RH on the left makes the shot come from closer to the slot. When I play left, I tend to cut inside and take a better angle shot. If I go wide I can keep the puck way away from the defender when I make my move as I have it out in one hand. I can still do a curl to the left and have an immediate pass ready. It is easier however to take a breakout pass when Im on the right and make a good pass to the center while on the move. Xi Retlah iX 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2008 I play left D as a righty. I prefer this much better to right D because i can get a one timer off quicker, and i have much more reach with a pokecheck while playing D if the guy tries to blow by me to the outside. On the right side, i'd have to reach across my body. I think its all PP, cause as a right D, i could play things along the boards much easier. It all depends on how u play. AWE46M3 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2008 I'm the opposite. I like to throw the puck far out on my backhand, drop the shoulder and beat a guy to the outside. If the guy can prevent me from getting a step on him I curl to the boards and back to the blue line to set up someone else. That's a lot harder if you're on the "right" side. It just shows there is no right or wrong and your preference has a lot to do with your skill set.Catching passes on the backhand is probably the hardest skill to teach, though smaller curves make it a little easier.I am RH and play LW/LD and I totally agree with these comments. As for catching the passes on the backhand, it is something that I do well, having played this side for a while and quite frankly, I feel more comfortable being on my backhand making passes. I like being able to keep my body between the a D and my stick and playing D I like to be able to turn out and keep my stick in a position to keep the forward from cutting inside on me. Dont me wrong, I like playing the right side too and sniping a goalie high blocker but the left side is where I feel at home.
JJStripes 1 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 I think kids should pay their proper wing when they are young because they usually have not developed a strong backhand.
AWE46M3 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 Just to add to some aforementioned players, let's not forget my all-time favorite off-wing player, Pavel Bure. :P
Neal 41 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 Just to add to some aforementioned players, let's not forget my all-time favorite off-wing player, Pavel Bure. :PDid Bure really play a wing, or just have a preference for which boards he stood near while waiting for a break away pass?
