I think it's all just a matter of personal comfort, really. When I was about three years old, I told my parents I wanted to play hockey. A few weeks later, my father came home with a straight-bladed WinWell and said "grab it" - without thinking, my left hand went to the butt-end, my right (dominant) hand went lower on the shaft; it's just what felt natural. I've played that way ever since and have never given it another thought.

I've never really read much into this "debate." People say a lot of things; "It's a proven fact that if you're going to play with your dominant hand on the bottom, you're going to limit your ability to see the ice" or "You're going to be able to handle the puck better if your dominant hand is on top" or "If you play with your dominant hand low, you're going to have a harder slapshot" or whatever - I've heard it all, and I don't give it much stock. Personally, I play with my dominant hand on the bottom, but my vision and stickhandling skills are some of my strongest attributes, while my clapper is pretty average for my age/skill level.

Interesting thread. Let us not forget that eye dominance palys a big factor in comfort or strong side selection.

If you hold out a pencil and use it's tip to 'mark a target' with both eyes open, close one eye at a time afterwards and see which eye is on target.

I am very curious how many right handers shooting left out there are really left eye dominant...thus their brain simply found the shortest path first.

That is how they used to pick and train snipers, by finding the correct site first that is...

Famous example in golf: Phil Michelson, he is a right hander, plays lefty. He is also left eye dominant and if you gave him a rifle or even better, a bow, left handed setup will bring in higher consistency and accuracy.

My eyes are ambidextrous.

Are you from Brooklyn? I knew a guy from the Heights, his eyes were ambidextrous as well. Blind Willy Johnson they called him.
