When to replace runners

Recommended Posts

How much steel should be left on a runner before you have to replace it? I mean, the amount of steel between the holder and the bottom of the blade. Somewhere I thought I read that it was 1/2 inch but I only have 1/2 inch left now and I've only had my skates sharpened about 6 or 8 times since I got them. Could that be right that I'm running out of steel already?

I'm sure 6-8 times is too soon. But past a certain point, my sharpener mentions that it's getting tough to get the skate into the sharpening rig because of lack of steel. That's probably a good indicator.

6-8 sharpenings is defiantly WAY too few for it too be time to change the runner unless the sharpener didn't know what they were doing. For me my runners last about 30-40 sharpenings if not more.

When your getting close to about 3/8 to 1/4 of an inch at the slimmest point of the blade which will probably be close to the toe or heel part it's definitely time to look at replacing them, before you start wearing the holder.
