Transitioning from old skates to newer ones

Recommended Posts

I recently switched from some vintage 98 Bauer Supreme's to one90's and I'm still trying to figure out the best way to lace them.

Did anyone else who made this kind of jump feel that you don't need to lace them up nearly as tight as the old skates since the new ones are much stiffer? It just feels odd leaving them so loose compared to what I've been used to for so long. I'm still trying to find that perfect balance between too tight and too loose

I was also considering not lacing the top eyelit but I don't know if it will feel too unsupportive...

Any thoughts?

Yup, great skates but they were in some rough shape after 10 years, the plastic in the back has been long gone.

I'm still hanging on to them for pond skates just need to track down a black custom + since I broke one the very last skate I wore them...

Yes great skate in their day, I had the Bauer Supreme 6500 these were made a little after the Bauer 7000's in repsonce to the complaint that the 7000's where to hard to break in due to stiffness.

But a few freinds had the 5000's and those things are like bricks ( very heavy ). I bet the first time on your lightweight One90's you prolly floated over the plexiglass at the rink!! LOL

Yes the new skates now are stiff shelled - One90's especially.

I think the general rule of thumb for good fitting skates is that the eyelets will be about 1.5" apart, anything less skate was too wide, anything more and maybe too narrow.

Lets see what other's say about your lacing techniques...sound like the One90's don't have the volume as your 5000's did.

Why are you leaving the top eyelets unlaced?

I do this on my S7s as I cannot get a deep knee bend with the top eyelets laced. The supportiveness of that skate, for myself, is 95% the same without the top eyelets laced.

I have also found that tucking my skate tongue into my shin pad helps the supportiveness as well.

changing any kind of skate is tough. no matter how different or how old or new you will always have to break in skates.

coming from a ten year old skate to a one90 is a huge change in stiffness though. if you like your skates a little less stiff then i would probly just get them snug but not tight.

but if i were you id just lace'em up tight and get used to them. one90s are made to fit real tight to your foot the best thing i think for you is to get used to them being stiff because they will benefit you more if you use them how they are supposed to be used.

of course everything is your own preference so just remember we are just a bunch of guys on computers. we dont have your skates or your feet so no matter what we say go with what feels good.
