skate pitch

Recommended Posts

So, after reading quite a few posts about this, I still have a few more

questions regarding the pitch of a skate blade. Let me give you some

background first. I've skated on Bauer's for 10+ years and now that I've

picked up some Graf's (705's), I'm finding what once was an easy task, now

more difficult.

For those curious as to why I purchased them: because they fit and I couldn't

pass up the 140$ for a brand new pair of skates.

So, back to my dilemma. When I skate in the Graf's, I feel like I'm running

out of skate blade. It's like I'm hitting the tip of my skate when taking

strides. My stride also feels a lot shorter and I'm feeling a little more

fatigued. Is this a combination of the pitch and the radius? Also, I've

been skating on 272 tuuks and these are 263. My only positive is turning and

comfort. Anyhow, I figured I'd throw on a pair of tuuks to see how that

goes. I haven't made the swap yet. Until then, I'm open to ideas. Should I

change the pitch to neutral or start with changing the 11' radius (if I'm

right) to 9'?

Thanks

-Kas

Your problem is coming from the length of the steel. Going to a shorter radius is just going to make matters worse.

I figured the blade length had to do with the feeling of "running out of blade". Do you think this is causing the fatigue as well? I'm just wondering if being pitched so far forward is causing some of these problems.

Best explanation of skate profiling and radius' that I've seen/read:

Thanks for the link. I'm sure that will explain what I'm looking for.

Yes, you're doing more to get the same result

From personal experience and from what I've read, Grafs have a more toe down pitch compared to other skates. You can get your steel profiled to have a more neutral pitch and maybe a bigger radius. This should provide more stability and more speed since more steel is on the ice instead of having all your weight on your toes and on the front portion of the steel. And btw, noicing is where I get my steel profiled.
