Glove questions (mostly Supreme 70s)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm still in the market for gloves after the abortion that was the Worcester Sharks sale but I am narrowing things down and will be purchasing soon (hopefully). I've searched around and read reviews and still have a few questions on some of these models. I'm heading to Pure Hockey tomorrow to get the skates sharpened anyway so I can check on fit and figure out the preference of what I like on some of these then. I just am curious what your thoughts are on the specifics and overall on the gloves.

Supreme 70s:

1. I've read that these are essentially the One90s without the stretch palm, is that true?

2. How's the protection on these bad boys?

3. The palm - how is it? Does it hold up well? Also, what is the advantage to having the wrap palm as opposed to a regular palm say on the Supreme 50? And will this type of wrap palm be an issue if I ever need to get them repalmed?

4. How is the flex-thumb? Good mobility?

5. The slinky cuff - any have any opinions? Is it protective? I did read one person that said the cuff was susceptible to slashes. Also, how does the slinky cuff work, is it adjustable? What's the word on it? Couldn't find much on the slinky cuff.

Vapor XX/XV:

I've heard these are tanks and I'm seriously considering these. How's the weight on these things? Any knocks on these whatsoever? The XX seems to be amazing to everyone. Is it a breathable glove without the nylon shell? Is the stretch palm worth the extra money?

Vapor Pro series (XXX clones) from Hockeyworld:

Anyone know the "tweaks" they made to the XXX? Maybe just a bit of the shell? Or palm? I'm interested in these as well.

Your help is, as always, greatly appreciated.

I'm currently using the XX and I do have some complaints about it. It's very light and broke in quite fast with a lot of padding. However, I'm used to gloves that fit a little wider than the XX and it's a tighter feel for me. I don't find it very breathable but the Dri-Fit lining helps out with the hand sweating. Also, I find that I get a lot of tape residue on my right palm since I shoot lefty and it becomes annoying because it adds extra grip to my stick.

If your looking for something with ventilation that is padded as hell you should look into the Pro 4-rolls. They are absolute tanks and are vented on the backrolls. Plus they're cheaper than the XX.

I am also going to put in a vote for the 4-Roll. I picked up a pair of 4-rolls and a pair of Supreme 70s at the same time and wore them interchangeably until I broke them in. I got both pairs at the same time, and off the bat the Supreme 70s were my favs as they felt more comfortable. As i broke both sets in, I switched to the 4 rolls more and more, to the point I was using them 3 nights a week and the 70s the one night my 4 rolls were still damp. With that said, I don't dislike the supreme 70s at all, I would be thrilled if they were the only pair of gloves I had, as they are a very comfy, nice glove, its just that I feel the 4 rolls are a better glove.

For your questions:

1.they don't have the vented dri-fit liner, but the hole is still there, there is piece of dri-fit over it, so it could be vented if you wanted it to be. Other than that, the palm is the only difference I believe.

2. Ive never had a problem with the protection on these.

3. The palm is good, both pairs are holding up just fine after a fair amount of use.

4. Great mobility in the thumb.

5. The cuff is not adjustable, its just like a second layer of cuff that extends out, it moves if you push it, but i wouldn't move under normal use. Both the 4 rolls and the 70s are 14 inches and the 4 rolls come up just a bit higher than the top of 70s and the 4 roll is a straight cuff, so it protects high all the way around. The 70 has a wave type shape, so there is a little less protection on the sides, but again I've never had a problem playing college club hockey with these bad boys.

All in all the 70s are a great glove, the only experience I have with XX are the pair my roommate bought and i did like the stretch palm. So I would say go for the 70s if thats what you want, they are awesome, but my vote goes to the write in candidate of the 4 rolls.

Thanks guys. Tried on some gloves yesterday, and at this point I am 100% getting the Supremes. The only problem is I'm now into the One90. I don't know if I should be spending the $$ for it but it felt amazing. The Supreme 70 was also a beauty but that stretch palm on the One90 blew me away. The XXX was just too huge - the cuff on it was absurd (and I was expecting a wide, flared cuff) and older vapors just didn't do it for me like the supreme line did.

Anyone know any good deals for the On90s? Best I can find is $129. I can get the 70s for $79 so the $50 difference is somewhat holding me back. I'm hoping I can get a good deal soon on these.

Thanks again.

The One'90 is an awesome fitting glove. If you like it get it. Sometimes you just need to throw caution to the wind and go for the things you like. I don't think you'll really go wrong either way whatever glove you decide because both are great fitting gloves. The price isn't that unreasonable for a top of the line glove.

Yea, but it is unreasonable for my wife!

I think I'm going for it anyway, though. Nice to see that IW has free shipping on anything over $99. The shipping is a little ridiculous at some of these places (plus handling fees).
