masterpeice_patrice 4 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 i seem to be catching some bad breaks lately just recently last monday during a pick up game in mississagua one of the defencemen from my side was trying to make a cross ice pass from behind our net and he flung the puck too high and caught me in the left eye.. i recieved 8 stitches my eye is blood shot red i can see out of the eye the doctor said ill be fine. its swollen black/purple and shut. now im going to have to miss training/working out for another month.. the first thing i worry about is the eye and getting better asap. to all those guys who dont wear visors.. please wear one. i was very stupid to remove mine. when i think about it right now.. maybe its a sign that i should just call it quits with hockey.. get married have some kids and who knows if they are good enough i can live my dream through them. beer leagues and pick up games might be fun to be involved in but i believe they are not worth the risk. heatley015 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 Close call, but I don't think there is any need of quitting hockey because of it, take some time off and get yourself together, you don't want to risk coming back too early. Good luck and may you have a speedy and full recovery.
SuperMan3 1 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 I don't think i'm going back to visors unless I make a junior team this year.
NYR1982 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 I'll always wear a cage. I've worn one since I started playing and I actually feel weird without it. I tried a half visor and I saw the game a little better but still felt vulnerable. Plus it fogged up a lot. Everyone in my office who plays wears at least half visors and all say they will never take them off.

If you play again, wear a cage. It will be an adjustment but you will get use to it.
JamesCL 2 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 Yeah i was there, one of the nastiest gashes ive ever seen, he was flowing like a faucet!get your head out of your ass, you'll continue to play, but wear a VISOR or a CAGE like i told you!:)
qmechanic 17 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 Hey... just because you got hit in the eye doesn't mean that it's a sign from God to quit hockey. You were careless about not wearing facial protection and you had a close call, but at the same time, a lucky break. Just treat it as a cautionary lesson, get better, and get back on the ice with a cage or combo. If you really want to be safe, don't use a visor. That doesn't guarantee anything; just ask Saku Koivu.Sure, having to miss a month of workouts and ice time sucks, but remember it's just a temporary setback. People have come back from a lot worse; a torn ACL takes a whole year to recover from. Might I suggest trying to do something else like learn about hockey tactics while you're on the mend? TheBeatGoesOn 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 I wouldn't quit because of that. You said it yourself that the injury could have been prevented had you have left the face protection on your helmet. Just do that and you'll be fine...
chk hrd 164 Report post Posted June 1, 2008 .. maybe its a sign that i should just call it quits with hockey.. get married have some kids and who knows if they are good enough i can live my dream through them. don't take this the wrong way, suck it up, you got hurt and you are still alive and capable...and PLEASE don't turn into one of those parents who live vicariously through thier kids, that's a good way to ruin a childhood and relationship. If you don't think you want or can play the game anymore then quit. if you don't think bear league is worth the risk then you should rethink alot of things. I've made alot of friends from bear league and pick up and have alot of fond memories. In our house hockey is more than a way of life it is part of our life. sdcopp 1 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 Don't give up on it unless playing is no fun for you. I can promise you it will heal and hockey will carry on if you want it to. Mine's healing just fine, albeit not quite as bad as yours sounds:follow RICE rules, get a visor cage and go have fun
lextune 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 wear a cage and your face will be fine.+1Unless you are getting paid millions of dollars to play I say wear a full cage.
Cleophus 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 Sorry to hear of your injury!maybe its a sign that i should just call it quits with hockeyIf anything, maybe consider it a 'gentle' (ie, you didn't lose your eye or fracture your orbital bone) reminder to wear face protection in the future!I hope you heal quickly and get back on the ice soon. eric42434224 1 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 Agreed. The only "sign" from this incident points directly to wearing facial protection. I will never understand to concept of how anyone thinks it is worthwhile to risk injury to to one's teeth, eyes, etc. all in the name of what.....marginally better vision in a beer league? It is just plain ludicrous. However, I hope the OP heals fast and continues to play this great sport....just with a cage!!!!!
joshy207 15 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 I learned my lesson the hard way... after the SECOND puck to my eye. The first one just cut me, I was swollen and black-and-blue for a few weeks, but no permanent damage. The second time, not so lucky. I broke the orbital bone in 2 places and had to have surgery to repair it. The doc told me he didn't know how I still had an eyeball. So, from now on, full cage, without question, forever. It is not worth the risk. Chicks don't dig scars that much...
TheBert 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 If you only play hockey without any facial protection and don't expect to get hit in the face, then yes: Quit.
