Going to Toronto

Recommended Posts

Hell, Labatt matched the $1/beer deals last summer with a $30/30, and for some inexplicable reason Harp was under $1 a bottle at The Beer Store for like a month.

God I love this country.

Try to see Rush, I Mother Earth, and the Tragically Hip.

The Hip just played their only Ontario show last week in Belleville. You're out of luck in that case.

Dyke march and gay pride parade coming up.
Haven't lived in the area for over 14 years so not too familiar with what's trendy or what's still there.

Hall of Fame

Get a burger at Hardee's Dangerous Dan's

1/2 chicken and fries at Swiss Chalet

Check out Casa Loma

Pay around $40 $24 for a case of 24 beer

Picture in front of Maple Leaf Gardens a big, empty Loblaws, last of the Orinal Six Arenas still standing

Definately visit one of the local dancing establishments, support a single mom or help a student through college, Hell do both simultaneously

T,FTFY

Damn I've been gone too long.

Did I actually type Hardees.

You guys must have known I meant Harvey's.

Come on a case (a real case of 24) of beer in Ontario for under $30 your sh#tt*n me. I'm moving back home.

Well maybe back to Calgary.

Have they leveled The Gardens yet? I did google but couldn't find anything definitive.

Just Hockey - Don Mills + Eglington (north on Don Mills)

Duke's Sports - Kipling and Bloor West

Hockey Experts - Various around the GTA, 2 in Mississauga, 2 in Scarborough, 1 in Vaughn

Toronto Hockey Repair (watch out, they're snobby and jerks sometimes) - Dundas West and Bloor West

The two I'd recommend the most are Just Hockey and Duke's. Hockey Pro Life is pretty brutal, sure they have a lot, but the prices are kinda steep sometimes and their service sucks. Hockey Experts is kinda good, owned by a big box sporting goods company (who I work for...hey they pay the bills and I get good health coverage), but I know the analyst and they get good stuff and the staff is trained. THR I personally hate. They've ripped me off in the past and their service to me was beyond pathetic (someone told me that Vapor and Supreme were two different BRANDS, not models).

Are there any shops in Aurora that i can go to, to get my skates sharpened and molded?

Go to All Pro Sports in Newmarket.

Best hockey shop in the entire area.

I knew I paid damn near $40 bucks for a case of 24 on my last visit back home. You can't cherry pick the sale or bottom value beer prices. Beer in Canada is expensive, you just can't get around that. I can go to the Sleeman Brewery in Guelph at their outlet store and pay double for 24 beer than I would here for the same imported beer in Florida, although if gas keeps going up that could change.

In Ontario, import and premium beers retail for about $36 to $45 per two-four. Mainstream brands offered by the big brewers retail at about $32 to $36. That means the discount brewers, with two-fours priced at about $24 to $29, are saving customers up to $10 per case. The price differential, combined with the lack of differentiation between mainstream and value brands, is one of the major reasons discount beers are doing so well. "Mainstream beer is too expensive," says Brickman. "There's quite a spread there between that and value-priced beer, and not a big sense of difference as far as taste." Another factor is the decline in the market appeal of middle-of-road beer heavyweights. "One of the reasons why this value discount segment has emerged like it has," says Hartley, "is that the mainstream brands, like Molson Canadian and Labatt Blue, have destroyed too much of their brand equity, so people don't really see the difference between these brands and the discount brands."

Just didn't want you to limit your search to just the city since the airport is fairly central to a number of places. There is a new Pro Hockey Life in Mississauga that might have some opening week specials.

When I went to Toronto a few mos back, this is what i did . . .

1. HHOF, got a picture with the cup. If you go now, they may not have the actual cup as it's floating around with the red wings

2. CN Tower - awesome if you go with your significant other, if I remember, there was a restaurant up there as well. My wife and I ordered the dessert and it was great

3. Yonge Street (shopping for the wife)

4. Chinatown (not a bad chinatown considering I grew up in San Francisco)

5. Its not toronto, but if you have time, Niagara Falls was the very BEST thing we did. The canadian side is so much better than the US side. It was only 45 min away from toronto.

We will probably head back there later this summer, we had a great trip

Caribana is coming up, main events are July 31- Aug 4. People come from all over the U.S. for that. So much so that it's also probably Toronto's one event that a lot of locals *leave* the city for.

ended up going to pro hockey life, as a compromise so that my sister could shop. and i must say, i was quite impressed. staff was helpful, except finding shoulder pads. i thought the prices were also reasonable, considering what i see in switzerland. I was about to buy some tps R8 nylon gloves, and the guy suggested the dolomites. tried em, loved em. for 130, couldnt say no. to bad they didnt have a better shaft selection...

I can't think of a place in Toronto that has a decent shaft selection.

Swiss Chalet has definitely gone downhill. I remember when a quarter-chicken dinner was a meal.. Now those chickens look more the size of pigeons.

Someone mentioned Dangerous Dan's. From their menu (which happens to be in my pocket), the description of the "Collosal Colon Clogger Combo":

24 oz. Burger topped with 2 Eggs, 1/4 pound of bacon and 1/4 pound of cheese. Served with small poutine and a large shake.
