Fuel 130 vs R8

Recommended Posts

There's a lot of praise on here about the Mission Fuel 130 gloves, as well as the TPS R8 (either model) gloves, and I'm having a little trouble deciding between them.

Has anybody tried both of them?

Thanks

Oddly enough, I currently have both. I have the R8 lites with the 50/50 nylon/leather shell and the FFH palm along with the 130.

The 130s have a smaller profile, feel lighter, and fit more closely to the hands (but looser than say the Mission HE750 or NBH One90s). I haven't used it in games yet - mostly stick time and the adult clinics I skate so I can't comment on protection.

The R8s I still use during games as I had these first. I would give a slight edge on the palms to this as the Mission one has a couple of layers going on. The R8s are pretty protective overall (there are some scuff marks on the leather where I guess I got slashed or hit the boards but never noticed at the time, only way after the fact) although the odd stick and puck have gotten me on the tip of the pinky and I've felt it.

The reason I got the 130s is while I like the R8s, I'm pretty active with the stick (play D and take bottom hand on and off a lot) and once in awhile I'd lose the glove during play and am looking for a glove with similar overall feel/protection but a closer fit to the hands.

I was also deciding between the 130 anf the R8 Lite. I ended up getting the R* because I felt it was more protective and I liked the palm. The 130 also felt too light. I did, however, really like the glove. I don't think you can go wrong here. The 130 ventilation is definately better.

How is the palm on the 130? I wasn't able to try it in stores as the demand for Mission products isn't that big here, but I tried on the R8's with both the FFH and the Digitech and they seem nice.

I see the vent right on the back of the glove on the 130, is there any ventilation at all on the R8's?

No ventilation on the R8s. That being said, it doesn't feel hotter.

Regarding palms, the R8 does take some break in time (couple to several skates) while the Mission's are ready to go right out of the gate. I prefer the R8 palm but that's not an indictment of the Mission palm: the R8 just feels a little better to me but probably b/c I've just had it longer.

Agreed!

I prefer the FFH palms on the R8's. Had no issues with "break in", after a shift or two you don't notice they are new.

I just traded my caps pro-stock gloves for the 130's with a fellow MSHer. They were basically like new. I've played 2 games with them. One of the guys on our team has one90's. I tried one of them and one of the 130's on each hand.

The 130 fit tight, but not as tight as the one90.

The palm has a layer of nash reinforcing the palm. It also has black rubber type grips on the finger tips.

The inside of the glove is lyrca apparently. It's also moisture wicking, however I hang my gear up, and use these in the thursday league, and rbk's for my friday league, so they are dry for me each time.

These are, without doubt, the best gloves I have EVER put my hand into. The mobility I have with my thumb, which may seem like a minor thing, but to me it's huge, is great. It gives be better grip on my stick (which didn't stop me whiffing on an easy shot last night, but that was not the gloves fault), as well as more control with my wrist roll (which is still a work in progress).

I don't know the R8, so can't offer a comparison. I've had CCM Vectors, RBKs, Mission HE750 gloves. I've tried on Easton, Warrior and most of the NBH styles.

These are without doubt the best gloves I've ever used. And has absolutely sold me as a mission glove man going forward, barring and problems with durability.
