When was the fight strap introduced on the jerseys?

Recommended Posts

I thought it was sometime in the eighties, because of Rob Ray, but I was reading somewhere that the "Rob Ray" requirement was that the fight strap actually had to be attached, but it was already on the jerseys.

They always refer to the rule about fight straps as the Rob Ray rule but I'm not sure when they first started using them on jerseys. My guess would be sometime in the early 80's when they were trying to clean up hockey's image a bit after the years of the Broad Street Bullies and the Big Bad Bruins.

I've seen some old jerseys (don't remember if it was ebay or where) that had a very thin "tie down" basically a lace in the back of the jersey....might have been a team modification back in the day...I'm thinking these were 60's-70's jerseys.
