McGill @ Vermont U

Recommended Posts

Officially it wasnt a NCAA hockey game, but it was still a very interesting game to watch!

Montreal's McGill Redmen and Martlets were down in Burlington on sunday to play both Vermont University Catamounts teams (men and women).

The men's game was awesome, even tho it wasnt the stands werent filled up, Vermont won 3-2, right after my girlfriends team beat the lady Catamounts 1-0.

After living this, I really feel like going to see a game somewhere else in the USA!

Here are the pictures I took from both games and at the rink.

It's a shame you didn't get to see UVM with a packed crowd. It is a great venue for college hockey. I played a few games there last year in a Jr. A showcase. Being from Montreal if you want to see a good game with the best enviroment. Clarkson University in Potsdam New York. It's probably a little over 2 hours for a drive but if you went to their rival game against St. Lawrence University you would not be disappointed. St. Lawrence is 10 minutes away representing Canton, which is Potsdams rival. Clarkson has a great pep band and very active student section, they have their own website - www.bonesaw.org

Is Vermont a good NCAA school? I know McGill has been awful so far for CIS. For mens..

What was the McGill-St. Lawrence score? For mens... My bud plays for St. Lawrence and always says his team would ruin CIS teams.

The Redmen represented their league at Nationals last year, so they won playoffs in the Ontario league :)

They had a very good team but this year might be different...

The Martlets played St-Lawrence last friday and they lost 5-4.

That barn looks very similar to Appelton at St. Lawrence, I love that feel of the wooden bleachers and sloped ceiling.

Tmac you are absolutly right, there is nothing like a St. Lawrence-Clarkson game. Dupes if you ever get the chance, check that out.

The Ontario-Quebec Division is mostly considered as the least talented in Canada. McGill is the best woman's program currently in Canada right now.

UVM is ok. Slightly above average team. Finalist in Hockey East last year before losing to Boston College. Did not make the NCAA tournament, however. They've definitely turned it around since the "elephant walk" hazing scandal.

Nice pic from the Gut!

Eh gerbe, I'd give UVM more credit than that. They're just growing into their spot as Hockey East contender. You going to the game at BC friday by chance?

Got my first taste of NCAA hockey last night here in Fredericton. Maine made the trek over here, and well, they were outplayed by UNB but came out with a 5-4 game. Maine's goalie was respectable, while UNB's goalie allowed 5 goals on like 22 shots. Maine was 3 for 4 on the PP whereas UNB was 0 for 8. It was a good game, I thought Maine would of dominated a bit more, especially after UNB was manhandle by UMASS 6-0 I thinmk, and they loss to BU 4-1. UNB and Maine meet tonight again, I won't make that one. Maine's captain Dani-Pepin?, well one of the two captain's is Chara like in size.

Maine is awful now. They finished in 9th place out of 10 teams in their league last year and missed the playoffs altogether. Which is unheard of for Maine. They should be even worse this year. When Shawn Walsh died, that program started to go downhill. Their new coach is running them right into the ground. The few assistants around there were holding off the inevitable for a while after Walsh's death in 2001. Danis Pepin is one of those great finds by their old assistant coach Grant Standbrook - who has now left the program.

Wait until Boston College heads up north for the New Year's break series with UNB. They are always the fastest team in the NCAAs and last night against Wisconsin they looked faster than any other team I've seen in the last 12 years. Frightening. That will be some serious entertainment though. I highly suggest you get tix for that one.

Article before the game:

"All the national-championship calibre teams in Canada are certainly right on par with all of our teams that play at the top level, too." -BC Coach

Article after the game: UNB 5 BC 3

Now, I know BC was missing the world junior kid, but for all those who think NCAA kill CIS teams regularly, heres your proof that our CIS teams aren't that shabby. Not playing over the holidays is no excuse either, cause UNB didn't play either.

Oh god. Expect more of the same tonight with Venti and Kremer in goal for BC. BC hasn't played in a month-not saying it has to do with anything, but that's certainly longer than a holiday break. Good to see UNB doing well though, I always enjoyed when the CIS teams came down here to play the HEA teams.

Quick question: How is fighting handled in the CIS? Is it an automatic ejection and suspension like in the NCAA or is it just a major penalty like in major junior and the pros?
