MacDaddyDanny 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 I'm looking for some new skates. I'm thinking about the Nike Bauer Vapor XXXX because I hear they are pretty stiff skates. Being that I now have some titanium in my ankle, I need all the support I can get. Anyone else still playing after ankle surgery??? Does anyone wear ankle supports while playing? What are some other supportive skates that are worth trying on? Thanks in advance!!!
swede 50 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 hmm... And i tought that players with ankle problems was supposed to use softer skates, or skates with a softer upper. If i remember it correctly, the graf 707 skate was made for players recovering from ankle surgery/problems. The 707 was made so that a skater could wear ankle supports (brace, tape) and yet still skate.
greech 4 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 Can you get an exterior brace? I have an ankle sprain that really hurts my skating but I'm very content with my Stealths right now.
jsmart 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 Sticking with the NBH I have two pairs of one90's and they are solid in the ankle and I tried the one95's and they are solid in the ankle. To be honest I don't know that I have had a skate that didn't offer good support when laced properly, but the above skates do a nice job supporting my ankles. MacDaddyDanny 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 Yea, I'm certainly not wearing softer boots without any brace. Hence the reason that I needed surgery is because my ligaments were torn and my ankle shifted out of place. I know that all boots are supportive when tied properly, but there are some boots that have more support that others. All I've ever worn since I was 3 have been bauer boots, so my first intuition was to try the Vapor XXXX's because I had heard that they were one of the stiffest skates. I was just wondering how the one 95's compared or even another brand of skate.
skurl35 0 Report post Posted November 11, 2008 I broke my ankle 2 yeras ago in a game, although no surgery required. I took almost 2 years off and have been playing back in adult league for close to 2 years now. No issues w my ankle, but I contacted almost every site/supplier for ankle guards. No one had them, outside of say extra padding in the skates themselves. I called Cosby's in NYC. They used to make them for NHL players, but no one had asked for them for years. They made me a custom pair. They go over my ankle, with my skates on. I had bauer6000, and now am in a vapor xxx. No issue whatsoever with the skates themselves. Call them up. They will make u a pair. A lifesaver!!

Thanks for the info. These guards you speak of go over the boot and wrap around the ankle???? Kinda like the old wing type old school pads that defensemen used to wear??? skurl35 0 Report post Posted November 13, 2008 Yes. They are basically 2 pieces of material sewn together with plastic caps at the ankle points. They have a buckle in the rear. They actually look pretty cool aslo.
