Has anyone made the switch

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone has made the switch. I rock G5s and wanted to know if anyone has made the move to One95s or Vapor 40s and how they liked the switch.

Well it's not exactly the same as you but I came from custom G5 Ultras into custom One95s; the custom portions only being sizing as I have EE forefeet and AA heels. The One95s are stiff and if that is what you are looking for coming from the Grafs (I did) then your transition should be fine. I skated on Tuuk Customs + on the Grafs and have the same on the One95s - that would normally be the source for trouble when making transitions. The biggest adjustment for me was the extra eyelet - the extra support on the One95s. With Graf I often found myself cranking on the laces through the top 3 eyelets because the ankle portion softened up too quickly for my liking, granted, their concept is a free moving ankle...

I can't comment too much on the fit as both my Grafs and Bauers are custom. What I can say though is the One95s are a much deeper boot compared to Grafs in general and that the stock heel size on the Grafs are narrower so you may quite possibly may run into heel fitting issues during the switch. I doubt the One95 volume would be too much for you, most people I've see in Grafs have insteps that are way too large for the boot.

Hope this helps :)

coming from S15 that have pretty narrow heel & very good heel lock this was my concern as well

but thanks to TLBFan for suggestion it's not really an issue because One95 is so "pliable" uning JR's terms that you can literally mold them into whatever you want during heat molding

what I mean by that is when the boot comes out of the oven it's quite soft, and you can compress the heel portion with your hands making it as tight of a fit as you'd like

I made the switch when the one95's came out last spring. Vapor XXXX was too narrow in the toe/forefoot...in an E width it was much too wide. I went from a 7.5D G5 with Lightspeed 2's to a 7.5D one95: I also had a pair of Vector 10's I moved to in between, but didn't like them. The one95 fits great and has felt "right" since the first time I stepped on the ice with them. The best advice I can give is to read JR's (here) and Darkstar's (here) impressions from last year. I and pretty much everybody else echo their sentiments. I highly recommend the one95 and I saved about $100 by buying at a LHS.

I have an affliction for really stiff skates, and the one95 more than gets the job done. On that note though, if you decide to go custom, whatever you do, go stock sitffness or lower unless you are either 300lbs or have cast-iron feet. Several of my friends who play pro were crying like babies because the 3 stiffness was killing thier feet during initial break in of the one95's. They all had previously worn Vapor XXXX's and just thought they could order up thier pattern in the one95 in the same stiffness lol.

I just went from supra g5's to a vapor xxv. I actually went from a vapor xxv in a 7 to a g5 in a 7 narrow to a vapor xxv in a 6.5. The g5's in a 7 fit better than the vapor size 7; they fit really nice, but I missed how light the vapors were, and all in all I think I like the tuuk lightspeed better than the cobra. So I tried the vapor a half size smaller, and that's the best so far. They don't fit quite as nice as they graf, but they fit good enough, and given the weight, and the tuuk lightspeeds, I think the vapors are the best for me so far. By the way, I went with the xxv instead of the xxxx's, because I think the xxxx's might just be too stiff for me. I weigh about 140, and have had trouble in the past breaking in stiff skates. The xxxx's are a little lighter though.

I went the other way. Went from the Vapor XXII's over to the Graf 735's. It was a big swing from a -1 profile to a +1 profile. First time on them felt like I was diving into the ice when I was skating. It toke me about ten minutes to readjust to the profile of the skates and a few games after that to be able to manoever the way I was doing in my Vapors but now I'm good again. The fit of the Grafs was also much tighter but not uncomfortably so because it's such a slimmer skate, even the wide version. I'm okay now though because I've accustomed myself to skating on the balls of my feet again.

I really don't see anything wrong with either skate. Both companies have a different theory on how a skate should be positioned on the ice for maximum performance. It's just what you are most comfortable with personally that detemines what skate you want to be in.
