Skate Blade Question

Recommended Posts

I have an older pair of skates that I plan on using on the pond, but the blades are pretty worn down. I've never had to replace the blades, so how would I go about doing it?

Can I buy blades, but keep the old blade holders? Or do I have to buy new blades and blade holders? Also, how do I know the size of blades/blade holders I need? Do they follow the same sizing system as the skate size?

Lastly, is this a replacement that I can do on my own, or would I need my LHS to do it?

Thanks for your help.

I tried to search for any questions about this. If there is already a topic on this, or if this is in the wrong forum, please let me know.

Custom+, no?

If that's the case, you don't have to swap holders, just the steel. Take the skates to your LHS and see if they've got any of the steel in stock in the size you need (the size should be stamped near the rivets above the rear towers).

Between the last 2 rivets on the outside of the rear tower on the rivet flange, to be exact. The steel can be removed by taking out the insole and looking in the heel for the hole that is there (they may be a little plastic cap for the hole). Then you need the right socket, unscrew the nut and remove the blades. You may need to tap it with a rubber mallet to loosen them a bit.

Buy the steel at your LHS and have them change it, they might give you a deal on the first sharpening. Plus there's no shipping and you won't have to worry about having the right size socket/driver.

I think so... they're pretty old, they don't say "TUUK Custom+" they say "TUUK Plus"

Would that still work?

They're the same holder, Tuuk C+ and Tuuk +. Take them to your LHS and ask, they'll probably have a set of steel on the wall and can swap them on the spot.
