Buy the helmet and get a medium cage. Have the store fit it for you to make sure it will work first.

I will definitely go try some helmets on and see what fits my head best. Is there anything that I should be on the look out for in a helmet? certain features? padding?

When I was younger I had the same problem with the CCM helmets, KILLED my head. I bought a bauer 5000 that I sitll wear today, feels / felt WAY better. Hope this helps.

finally this ordeal is over!

I put a medium cage on the larger 6k I bought and the chin cup was still not in the correct spot. I went to a local pro shop and tried on the Bauer 9500 in both medium and large but it wasn't quite right, tried the 8500 and same results. Finally I tried on a medium 5500 and it was freaking perfect. It only need some small fine tuning and the tool-less adjustments were really convenient. The EPP ( think that's what it's called - gel pack like inserts on top of stiff foam) was comfortable but I don't think I'd say it was any more comfortable than the squishy foam (VN?) type from my CCM 692.

I've played a few times now with it and have absolutely zero complaints, I can finally stop buying helmets lol

anyone need a Reebok 6k, size large with a full cage? I have one for sale

I got the NBH 5500 and it is definitely a worthy pick. NBH helmets are generally great at every level but you have to find what fit you like best.
