How tight do you go?

Recommended Posts

This probably won't be the most popular topic ever, but I just wanted to conduct a small survey to get a sense on the norm of how tight people tighten the hardware on their chassis. Personally, I tighten my Hum'ers all the way until the wheels barely spin. I just hate when you have to bring a tool or something because your screws come loose every shift or so.

I tighten mine until there's some resistance to turning and then just a little bit more to make sure they don't come loose to quickly.

Tightening axles till the wheels barely spin doesn't sound healthy for the thread of the axles. If you don't want your axles to come loose so often, just grab some loctite or something similar to hold them nice and secure.

Not to hijack the thread or anything...

But while cleaning my skates I decided to clean every inch of my skates. That includes all the grease and gunk that was in the threads of bolts and axles. Is it important to grease them back up before reassembling my skates together? If so what kind of grease/lube should I be using.

Thanks,

I did the same thing not to long back if there is that like blue plasticy looking stuff on the threads of the screw clean that off as best as you can and then reapply just a dab of lock tight to the axel make sure you do that after you insert it into the wheel.

That blue plasticy stuff essentialy does what loctite does, it's not hurting your skates in anyway, and it helps to keep those axles from coming loose as well

Well I removed everything, and don't have loctite on hand... is there anything else I can use as a substitute? Grease?

To answer the OP, I usually turn it another quarter to half turn after it is somewhat tight.

I tighten them kinda like a spark plug, just till there is a little resistance. THen I just make sure before every game that there still tight. Most of the time I don't even have to re tighten them.

Usually, if you tighten the axles until the wheels don't spin too well, you are either compressing the bearings, or causing the edges of the frame, where the center of bearings touch it, to tilt in too far and drag on the bearing like a brake. If the frame walls are not parallel or if they are too wide, they tilt in at the bottom as you tighten the axles, causing uneven pressure on the free spinning center of the bearing. Uneven side loads kill the spin and the bearings

What you want is blue locktite on the clean threads, then tighten everything down only as far as the wheels remain spinning at their best. The hard part is doing this ahead of time, so the locktite has a chance to harden.

I fully understand what I'm doing to my skates by tightening them how I do, and I'm fine with that. To me it's just how I like my wheels. I hate when they spin too freely because then I feel as if I have lack of control.

You are losing so much by doing that you are essentially saying you are not good enough to go fast or be able to control yourself. You are limiting yourself to much with slow wheels.

Hi, if 15 has the legs then let'em be... My Vector 10.0's with standard bones reds, no matter how tight I do em, they just spin like bastards.... I just take advantage of the spin... he,he,he...

P.S. Don't forget to angle those skates when pushing off, he,he,he.. I'm kinda drunk.. he,he,he...

Regards,

Nelson
