Helmet J clip problem

Recommended Posts

I put a cage on a new ccm 04 helmet, and the screws for the J clip on one side are just spinning around; I can't tighten them or get them to screw them out. I think the piece that backs the screw, into which the screw goes, is just spinning around, in the foam lining. Doesn't seem to be anyway to get it to stop spinning. I tried pulling the foam lining out a little, but to get to the piece it looks like you'd have to tear up the lining. I think it will all still work ok, but does anyone have any suggestions for this?

Well I would say if they are not working dont use them. They dont have to be on the helmet they are not mandatory. Just do the cage tighter to the chin.

Actually much safer that way!

It actually all fits together quite snug, with the cage tight to the chin. It just bugs me that the screws in the j clip are just spinning around, not really holding the clip tight to the helmet, and that the clip now can't even be removed since the screws won't come out.

I tried pinning the part that receives the screw, but it seems like its embeded in the foam liner, and I can't press it hard enough, even trying to use several devices to press, to get it to stop spinning. I think I'd have to rip through the liner to actually get to it. This may be unique to the ccm 04.

I'm not familiar with how the J clip fastens to your helmet but you should definately take out the screws and nuts because they rust really easily and then you'll never get them out. I know with my Bauer you needed to have the clear ear guards to properly secure the J clips.

I've run into the same problem with one of my older CCMs (wish I could remember the model). Once the ear guards are out, the bolts would not tighten completely on the receiver nuts. I'm assuming your using a cage if the J-clips are an issue, and allowing the chin cup to tighten against your chin does decrease the likely hood of your helmet getting knocked off. I've run into the rusting together issue before, and a squirt of breakfree when ever you have the bolts out seems to mitigate this.
