Profiling a Skate Like My Old Ones

Recommended Posts

I feel like with my new RBK 5k's with the E-Pros I am skating more on my toes than with my old Bauer 4000's with Tuuks. Without some fancy machine that most LHS's probably don't have, shouldn't any reputable LHS be able to "Copy" the profile from my old blades? I've searched on this topic and it seems like it takes either alot of experience or a specific machine (forgot the name) to do so.

Or is it trial and error?

if you bring your skates to a trusty LHS, they SHOULD be able to profile your new skates to your liking-just tell them exactly what you want (to be more on your heels, how much blade you want on the ice, etc..)

it might not feel completely like your old bauers since the pitch of the skate is due to both the boot and the holder/steel, but you can usually get pretty close.

Like Ringer said take the skate to you LHS and they can profile the blade similar to a Nike/Bauer Tuuk profile. He's also correct in saying it won't feel exactly like the Tuuk holder and blade because it depends on the bottom of the boot angle and position as well. I had my Vapors profiled to a neutral profile like a Reebok or Easton skate but it does feel slightly different from my Reeboks, not a lot , it's very close, but I still notice it slightly when I manoever in tight situations. I've adjusted to the different feel now, it only toke a couple of games, so it's not a significant factor in my performance.

Some shops may be able to copy your old profile. We have a template where the old runner is clamped to it and that shape is transferred to the new runner. However, if you have a lot of blade ground away at the toe and heel, if you want your new steel to be exactly the same, the sharpener will have to blade match and grind away the new runner till it matches. I don't recommend that. Often skaters are impatient when they get new skates and they want them to immediately feel like the old skates. That's not going to happen. You got use to your old skates over several years and each time steel was ground away for a sharpening, it was so minor you adapted no problem. Now, you get new steel and it's all added on in one swoop and you hate it at first. If you give your body time to adapt in the long run you will be skating better, more power, more response with the new runners. The new 5k's have a 10' radius, the old Bauers a 9'. Have your skates profiled to a 9' and start with a pitch appropriate for the position you play. Then adjust the pitch until you get the feel you want.
