Help on Vapor XXXX wood blade

Recommended Posts

so I picked up a Vapor XXXX wood blade from my LHS to try out the P88 curve. The blade seems to be quite light and solid and I can't wait to try them out.

However, I found that the hosel is too big for all the tapered shafts I have. Easton, Warrior, RBK......

Do I have to sand the hosel to reduce the size?

Is it normal? should I get an exchange?

I haven't used a wood blade for almost 10 years. Your help is appreciated.

Are you sure that the wood blade is tapered, I;ve never heard of there being a wood tapered blade only composite, If all else fails try shaving it down to size, but it may weaken the blade and crack on you. Be warned I've seen it happen.

vapor 40 woodies are definitely tapered. if you dont want to do the work, ask your local LHS (assuming you have one) and ask them for help. I've had problems with tight fitting combos but not to the point where it doesn't fit at all :S

Ive tapered wood blades and it works for me.

You have tapered wood blades that work for you, or you have tapered (as in sanded down standard hosels) blades to make them fit your shafts?

I've got a Bauer tapered wood blade and it fits into a TFlex shaft perfectly (thanks Ponty!). There are definitely tapered wood blades out there.

If all else fails, you can sand the tenon a little.

I spent 20mins getting one into my dolomite shaft, corners needed to be shaved down and I should have shaved the size down but I shoved it in there

yes, I 'm trying to put it to my dolomite too. I spent 30 mins last night to sand the hossel and not much luck there. the 2 sides of the hossel are carbon fiber so I guess it is hard to shave than just wood.

I will try the corner tonight. but I don't want to break my shaft either.

I went to the shop at my rink last night and can confirm that the hosel on the xxxx woody blade is way bigger than the one on xxxx composite blade.

Is that a manufacturing error from NBH?

I just have the shop where I bought the blade install it for me. If something happens, they are on the hook and not you.

yes I may have to go back the shop eventually.

my only worry is that they will force it in (without shaving) and I will have a tough time to get it back out in the future.

getting it out is alot easier, when i took out my broken xxxx blade it came out way easier than going in, if you have a palm sander it should do the trick for the fiberglass sides as well

I use tapered Bauer wood blades in my prostock Dolo.

I find that they fit loose, with the hosel measuring .520" even. Other tapered blades I have measured run as thick as .540"

You can sand or plane the hosel down to fit, paying close attention not to gouge or remove material uneavenly.
